It seems like the only big companies with presence in Portland are Nike and Airbnb (there aren't too many jobs at the Airbnb office). I'm a software engineer and would love to move there if I can find a good job that pays at least $110k (base salary). Any suggestions for good places to check out? Or should I just look for remote work? * Companies that don't have long, drawn out, leetcode type interviews are preferred. I only have so much time off available for interviews, and I'd rather start interviewing now than take a month or more to prepare for the gamut of new grad CS q's. If that's not possible, I'll suck it up, kiss all of my vacation time goodbye, and get to practicing lol.
Intel. How did you come up with the base salary requirement of 110K? Whatever you are earning in Bay Area, at least decrease it by 20%. The housing is really cheap too. I went to an open house in Beaverton and it was 350K for 3 bed 2 bath. Same home in Bay Area is close to million dollars.
I don't live in the bay, and I have 6 yrs of experience with a CS degree. 350k is not cheap for a house that size, especially not in NC where I'm from. In order to truly afford a house that costs 350k, it's important to earn a salary high enough that the mortgage payment doesn't exceed 35-ish% of take home pay.
As a general rule (followed by banks globally), you can easily repay a lot 5-6 times of your base salary (before taxes). So You can afford a 350K loan at a salary of 60K-70K.
Ok. Iβll speak to a few people and move jobs to Portland, just for you. Hang tight.
BlondeGold, I'm a "she", I'm from North Carolina, and you're racist...
Amazon is here now. Entry level offers for college grads are around 110k. Get in on this
I have 6 yrs experience, so I'm not exactly a new grad π
We don't care about years. Come in and show strong leadership and technical skills. You'll be compensated accordingly
Intel? π
Nike
Moda Health, Providence, Cambia and these are just in Healthcare, there are a ton of companies in SCM and Logistics, it is a big port, donβt just look at the cool companies.
Thanks Shux! I'm definitely interested in healthcare tech development much more than "Uber for x" type companies, so I'll check out the ones you mentioned. My goal is just to find a good place to work where I can keep working in web app development and earn enough to buy a house haha. Bonus points if I can find a team where I'm not the only female dev. That's getting kind of old - being the token lady.
Iβve been dreaming of PDX too for a long time, it is heaven for foodies!
Amazon AWS Elemental, no idea if they are hiring.
We definitely are
eBay has an office for mostly iOS / Android developers, but they are hiring more service devs too. Google has a Portland office. Amazon just moved in last year. Oracle. Walmart labs.
Salesforce?
IIRC not hiring new engineers there but not firing ones that already there. Probably hiring support, sales, marketing. Check with recruiting. Most of the engineers are hired for the offices in SF, Bellevue, Indianapolis, Virginia somewhere.
Yeah, I didn't see any software jobs at any Portland locations except for a middleware job, which I'll pass on.
