IBM Comp

I am interested in joining IBM. I have phd in cs and currently data scientist / sw dev with 3ish industry years of exp. These days what is IBM offering? Base? Bonus? Stocks?

Uber 2Tpj4u Jul 24, 2017

Don't.

Uber bloggah OP Jul 24, 2017

Valid reason why not?

Uber 2Tpj4u Jul 25, 2017

Because it's IBM. When it's on your resume people say "ewwwwwww"

Facebook fb2017 Jul 24, 2017

you will earn one third of your current pay. do you still want to join?

IBM cUdB12 Jul 25, 2017

And you'll never get a bonus or raise

IBM helloC58 Oct 30, 2018

Not true. I got an 8% raise this year.

Amazon _HR Jul 25, 2017

Shit. Shit. And none

Oracle ijCc22 Jul 25, 2017

IBM is done

Uber nVCt07 Jul 25, 2017

What is your current comp and level? If youre being underpaid it's possible that ibm could do better

Google 10b6n4l Jul 25, 2017

I don't think IBM is worth pursuing except for may be IBM research.

Uber bloggah OP Jul 25, 2017

The team i am interviewing with is research arm

IBM cUdB12 Jul 25, 2017

A former coworker that works on the Q research team love it. Loads of autonomy and room to explore apparently. I wouldn't expect the company will know what to do with it though.

Even Warren Buffett bailed out of IBM

IBM EyeBeeM. Jul 25, 2017

IBMer here. Base is good if you are at high band, equivalent to big tech but you won't get any bonus (may be a steak dinner bonus. I exceeded all my goals and got $800 😂) or RSU. Cost cutting everywhere even Watson. Co-workers are awesome but you will deal with incompetent managers. Why IBM? Why not Google? I had an offer from Uber, I could tell the cultures are very different. I'm jumping ship to join Facebook soon.

IBM cUdB12 Jul 25, 2017

Ugh. Take me with you.

Uber bloggah OP Jul 25, 2017

So only base offer, no bonus or stock? Wtf?

Uber bloggah OP Jul 25, 2017

Btw thx for your input

IBM grumpy@55 Jul 25, 2017

You will probably get a decent offer. what you won't get is a raise. In 10+ years, I've gotten 7 shares of stock (4 after tax). I once got a bonus that was 10% of base, but that hasn't happened in the 20+ quarters of declining revenue...best has been 2%. The experience might be worth it for a couple of years if the offer is good. Then you can bail for better money like all the other talent.

Google 10b6n4l Jul 25, 2017

That sounds quite grim. Why don't people leave then?

IBM cUdB12 Jul 25, 2017

"The experience might be worth it for a couple of years if the offer is good. Then you can bail for better money like all the other talent." This is too real for me right now. Just passed my 2 year mark, no hope of a bonus or raise, and my product was merged with another team in a re-org. My managers were replaced and my New management is under the impression that front end developers are on the team to solely develop high fidelity prototypes for user testing. Then the prototype is thrown over the fence to engineers who get to implement designs and UI code that hasn't been cross browser tested and 0 thought given to scalability. Not bitter at all.
