IBM or Samsung

Hey, I'd like to hear from the blind community for making a choice between IBM and Samsung. Here are the details: IBM : entry-level data scientist position , Austin, TX Base: 110k, 11k joining bonus that's it! Samsung Research America: NLP software engineer, interned there. The work involved more engineering than NLP stuff. My aspiration is to become a data scientist especially in building pipelines for recommendation engines, ads etc. Could anyone tell me how's the work of a data scientist at ibm? Thanks

I couldnā€™t live away from the ocean but if you donā€™t mind, Austin is pretty nice. I did my on-boarding at the campus in Austin. With 110k you can live like a king there. Check out the prices on Zillow. On the other hand, with Samsung you will still be in SV I assume. So thereā€™s that. But you also get SVā€™s cost of living.

Yes, makes sense. I'm more inclined to IBM at the moment. I'd just like to make sure I work on the latest technologies at IBM being a data scientist.

That's a pretty boss salary for IBM entry level AND in Austin. I personally find IBM to be a nice place to work depending on where you report. Which department is that role for?

Hey, thanks for sharing the opinion. I was told that I'm assigned to Watson cloud platform team for the data scientist role. I'd like to know what kind of work and technology stack that I'd get to work on in this team. Please let me know if you've relevant information. Thanks.

Do you know who the manager will be or any team details? Watson cloud and platform is the org name and there are many teams under the org. Having said that if you have any more details I can tell you what you will be working on, what the team does etc. good luck!

Hi, I'll check with my hr once and get back to you. So far, he has just told the organization name ie cloud platform. But, I'd like to know in general for now. Is the work culture fast paced and how's the learning curve? There's a notion that IBM is an old company and doesn't catch up with the current trend. Any opinions on this?

I know guys that work in the Houston office for what was SoftLayer (now ibm watson cloud) - they like it. Huge work life balance. Sometimes it drives you nuts though

I would personally avoid IBM. Wish someone told me before joining. Organizations in decline are different. Not sure how life at Samsung is, but they seem to do pretty well.

Iā€™m in GTS and work in of the mainframe teams. I donā€™t get all the negative posts about working at IBM. I have been there 8 months and love it.

Congrats for your new start! I am not on either of IBM or Samsung. Btw have you heard that Watson's business in Austin is in decline due to the end of contract with hospitals?
