I've an opportunity to become a people manager at my current firm. Would start with 1-2 interns then move on to have my own team... can continue doing some tech work but lot of other managerial stuff like work allotment, followups, status updates etc. On the other hand I've job offer from another firm better pay, IC role, to work on GPU design verification (HW). I see lot of hate for manager here, is it not good long term to get into management? I see middle management first to go when layoffs happen. I don't have an MBA. TC 170 K Yoe 12yr
You should move to managerial role only when u can manipulate the conversation and good in dodging the onwership to others...in managerial role myself from last 5 years ...and find it difficult when i cant dodge the ball
Is this a good place to be a manager. Sit down and discuss your charter with your manager. Is your manager good trustworthy ? Transitioning from IC to Manager requires your manager to guide you and train you for a lot of things like making sure employees are satisfied and work continues to get done. Do you think this is a good place for becoming a Manager - right set of tools trainings and guidance ? Would you have a charter and make decisions independently ? Is there room to grow and full-fill your ambitions ? I started on M track as soon as I had the opportunity, did not weight into account a bunch of these. My manager is great, but growth is non-existent.
Doesn’t managerial track pay better then IC for equivalent levels at Nvidia?

Prestige vs Money help me
Management is a different kind of work, you do things through others and you main job is to help them achieve their career goals. Unless you love that...you might consider stay as IC.
