Which company has a good program for Individual contributors to become engineering managers. By program i mean a well defined path with mentorship opportunities and training opportunties. For eg., Uber has apprentice program for the same. Looking to know similar programs at other companies too. Thanks
If you are looking to become a manager, look for companies that are growing/rapidly hiring. You need to have an open opportunity available to become a manager in addition to all of the training/mentorship. Far fewer people are promoted into management positions in organizations that are flat or shrinking.
Def. Not Nvidia.
Facebook. A lot of training and support, and in general the idea is to do it for people who want to switch, not force people who don't want it.
This is one area where Google does not do well
Microsoft
If my engineering manager at Microsoft asks if I’m interested in management, does that mean I suck, but not bad enough to fire—just enough to not want as an IC?
No, it means he thinks you might be a good manager. As to whether your engineering skills are poor - you would know best. If you think the average manager has inferior skills to you, then you must be a JOY to manage
