I got a IC4 offer from Facebook for the Menlo Park location, and below is the TC. Base 174k RSU 400k vesting over 4 yrs (100k/yr) Bonus 10% Sign on 75k YOE 6.5yrs at Epic Systems (healthcare IT) + 2 yrs = 8.5 yrs total I was expecting IC5 offer given that my recruiter said I would be interviewing for a senior level position, however they offered me level 4. I pushed very hard for IC5 but they said that was what the committee decided the right level for me would be. I am pretty confident that my interview went well (crushed the 4 coding problems, behavioral and system design was also great) so to be honest I was a little let down by the level 4 offer. That said, they maxed out the offer for level 4. I did some research and found that it is pretty common for FB to down-level so that candidate can get used to the internal tools and processes at FB, and then comfortably get promoted to level 5 (which again is their requirement to have devs move from level 4 to 5 within 2 yr mark otherwise they would be having a serious talk about the performance). Basically, I want to know from the group whether this is a common practice from FB to down level? I also want to know if this TC is worth the switch from my current employer (Epic Systems) to FB? My current TC is 166k base and 6k yearly bonusĀ with 10% increment on basebevery year. On average, I save 70k/yr after paying home mortgage and expenses. I can become debt free from my mortgage in next couple years based on my savings thus far so I am a little skeptical if switching is worth at this point in my life/career? Note that I am a team lead and Senior SD at Epic so I will also be losing that title over at FB. The reason I want to move is the Wisconsin winters and it has been hard for me and my family given that we prefer warmer weather. 6 months of winters feels like we are in hibernation mode where it gets dark by 4pm easily. Mentally, it get difficult and that is the sole reason for switching. Lastly, talking about Bay Area itself, it too has its own share of issues - wild fires, expensive housing, high taxes, long commute, etc. So, I was thinking to work at MPK location for a year or so, and once I am at level 5, I would move to Austin (or some warmer place which has low COL) and remote work (or may be work from their Austin office). My recruiter said that I can do so after working for 6 months from MPK, but advised to move to level 5 first and then make that internal switch which will make this both safe and easy. Given that FB has such flexibility, why would any one work from MPK (agreeed that enthusiasts wanting to work from HQ would love to be there), but seriously I want to know what are the benefits because I see none. Internal switch to different city or remote work just makes sense, not only saving you more money per month on housing but you also would pay less taxes. The compensation also remains same when you switch or remote work, so I only see benefits of moving out from Bay Area after finishing an year or so. Just want to know some of your thoughts.
Base is good. Stock can be negotiated
Not really much room on stock either as This is E4
I was originally granted $350k stocks but negotiated to get 400k. I think this is there max for level 4.
This is a decent offer for 4. If you are really able to perform at 5 youāll get it in 1 year, so I personally would take it and start with an easier level of expectation
Same thoughts. Also what the recruiter said to me.š
Congrats! The bay itself doesn't have wildfires, housing is indeed expensive, taxes are middle of the pack and very low if you own real estate (hence the high initial cost), commute is not long unless you make it long. Austin is similar but worse commute, higher taxes, and worse weather but is an option and both are options if you want to go remote.
Appreciate you clearing some of my concerns. Isn't state income tax 0% in Austin? If yes, mind if I ask why you say higher taxes?
State income tax in tx is zero and property taxes are infinite. States just get their taxes in different ways.
I would take this offer just because youāre in Epic Systems. Iāve heard they use a highly custom stack including their own programming language? Anyways, Facebook will give you a ton of exposure to āmodernā tooling and that will open up many more opportunities in the future. It also sounds like theyāre open to remote after a brief stint which sounds very appealing.
Doubt Hack is transferable outside of FB... But much better than the garbage Epic does.
Totally agree on all fronts. Like I mentioned in my post, I am thinking to move to a warmer and cheaper location (that fits my criteria) and remote work. This is gives me a lot of flexibility in terms of trying out Bay Area for a while and moving out if it isn't the right place for me.
E5 bar is high. It is easier to get in as E4, outperform at your level and get a promo to E5 than come in as E5, ramp up & deliver while meeting the bar. If you are good you can get to E5 in just one half.
You are overthinking this one. Career move from Epic to FB is by itself a big progression. TC wise you will be just slightly better in the first year vs. Wisconsin since BA is a lot more expensive. The jump to 5 will be where you see the big increase in TC, you just need to work on that promotion, so best to focus now on joining a good org, team, and manager. Your manager will make or break you experience, stress level, promo, and TC (psc ratings).
You are right, I might be ovethinking on this but I can't help since I have a family that will move with meš. Recruiter said level 5 promo will result in 15% bonus and 150k in equity. However there was no mention of base comp. Do you happen to know the level 5 TC based on my level 4 TC?
Base for 5 is 190-225. You should also be devouring levels.fyi for data points, many offer details there.
Does anyone from FB group know how is the compensation affected if you move to a different location and work remotely? My recruiter said the current compensation at the time of switch will remain intact and I won't see any pay cuts, however bonus and refresher equity will be adjusted based on the location you are working from. Anyone has any experience in this regards?
I have been very curious about those numbers, especially when it comes to MP location vs other high cost of living areas like LA.
My recruiter said that if you were to get a refresher equity of 100k in MPK, for eg, you would probably get like 60k or 70k in low COL city. Likewise for yearly bonus. Though I am earer to know myself how exactly this works in reality.
Yup. Depends your level. But generally base/bonus get slightly adjusted. Equity doesnāt.
When I asked my recruiter about remote work from Austin, I was told that I cannot remote work until I have completed 6 months at MPK. Is that correct info? Or should I push my recruiter for remote?

Faang Engineers who got laid off, how long did it take to get a new job?
Super lowballed! Please negotiate for more base and rsus. Given your writing skills and yoe you should be able to get more! Threaten to walk away if not increased!
Tell us more about how 366k is a "lowball"?
Tbh he just wrote this long I expected he needed a push to negotiate so I blankly gave one Didn't even bother summing it up as you did!
