In November 2016, Google recruiter reaches out to me for a ML Soft Eng position in London. I politely explain I want to move to the US and I think I qualify for an #o1 visa. She tells me that Google does not do O1s except if I’m some important researcher. I explain I am a PhD student but I have done some pioneering work (e.g. one paper cited in a Google patent) and I politely insist that I want to move to the US and that I know it is possible. She insists that only L1 would work for me. I tell her I could also do an internship on a J1 and that I have friends who have done this very thing in NYC both with Google and Facebook. She concedes and puts me in touch with the right recruiter for the internship in NYC. I do the two technical G Hangouts interviews and a month later they schedule a 3rd G Hangout. That last one I purely bomb bc they asked me to explain code in a lang not on my resume and at this point I’m over Google. In April 2018, I got an O1-A with agent authorization thanks to a lawyer who knew how to get it without a classic sponsor. I worked for one of the startups on my itinerary (I had gotten letters of intent from 4 dif entities stating they were interested in working with me etc) on a 4 month W2 contract which I ended up not wanting to convert to a forever position (FT?). In September 2018, I applied for an amendment to work with a different startup that was not originally on my petition. I received an #rfe bc my lawyers assumed I didn’t need to reattach the evidence originally filed but apparently you do now thanks to Trump. My lawyers were about to add all the original evidence on the response to the RFE but I also asked them what I could do to avoid having to amend my petition every single time I switch from one poorly funded startup to another poorly managed one #goals She recommended I form an LLC and we added my LLC on my itinerary. I start workin with the second startup on a 1099 until the amendment is approved. Two weeks later, the amendment gets approved and I start working with the same guys as a “proper employee” on a W2. Fast forward to July 2019, I quit from that startup bc their hypergrowth lead to painfully quick downsizing (somehow they went from 100+ engs to maybe 30 in a month and didn’t report layoffs?!!) which meant that in a month I went from being a DS to being a DS + DEng + 3 x Soft Eng (as part of their “very legal” PIP) and I basically burnt out (technically survived the PIP tho). Luckily, I was still working on my PhD so my quitting meant I could focus on that. As of October 2019, I’m a doctor in CS with a thesis in NLP. In November 2019, I have the dumb itch to apply again to Google thinking I got a work visa, I got a PhD, I got some US startup exp, they removed the “do no evil” from their values, we’re all grown up. Recruiter immediately gets back to me. She sends me a questionnaire about my visa status. None of the questions on there were relevant to my situation. I can work with anyone in the US on a 1099 right away or on a W2 after an amendment which takes two weeks to process. I have a lawyer and personal savings and I DO NOT NEED A SPONSOR. I respond to their questions but esentially don’t get to explain this since their qs were loaded/ made false assumptions, but hope the legal team will figure that out. I wait for them to schedule my interviews. Thanksgiving comes and goes. It’s now December and I reach out to my recruiter. She says yeah sorry it was the holidays but also legal team got back to her and Google will not be able to move forward with me in the US bc they can’t sponsor a visa for me. I tell her I HAVE A VISA already. I never hear back. I now desire to either never work for Google or infiltrate it (to destroy it?). How do I channel these feelings into something productive? No, but seriously, what do I do next time I’m in a very atypical situation talking to very typical people?
You are immature at the best :)
Well, if Google can’t have me at my “immature” they don’t deserve me at my “the best”
Lol and arrogant too - you should go to Uber
Infiltrate and Destroy? If you get in and if you succeed and If you get caught .... you know where will you be headed - Max “Pound me in the a$$” Jail. Life is too short. Earn your stripes and move on
It was a joke obvi
With the kind of profile you have, you can do a lot better than any of these large company cess pools.
Your desperation is showing.
Can I do some feature analysis on your desperation detector?
Also O1 is a sham - it’s all gamed, I know someone who doesn’t know anything , but was able to get letters proving she is awesome and she got it ! I am still shocked at that loophole, Trump needs to fix this and review.
That sucks. I personally had more publications and citations than rec letters so can’t identify.
When did this happen pongpin ? Things have changed in past few years
O1 is nothing. If you want to prove anything, you should get EB1a instead.
Lawyer is applying to that one
It just shows the bureaucracy of Google recruiting process, literally everyone down the line is a screw for the Googly machine without any original thinking, or they just tried to avoid complicated situation unless you are super important people. Talk with real people like us, dm me if you’re interested
Can you share a lawyer's name you work with?
Rakhel Milstein. She only works on extraordinary ability visas. https://www.milsteinlg.com/
>> I now desire to either never work for Google or infiltrate it (to destroy it?). How do I channel these feelings into something productive? Get rid of these feelings. On O1A you can work only for your sponsor. That’s a fact. If you want to work for Google, you need to do a contract job via your LLC, or get an O1 via Google.
I do not have nor need a sponsor. Double check your facts. I obtained my visa through an agent. This agent is my petitioner. He established a work itinerary for me comprised of several companies including my LLC that I would be working for. If I want to work with Google or any other entity in the US I can either sign a 1099 (corp-to-corp) between them and my LLC or I can amend the current petition to include them and therefore work on a w2. This is different (less complicated) than filing a new petition with Google as a sponsor. My lawyer is the absolute best.
Yes then it’s a contract job ! That’s what I mentioned. You are not a standard Google employee ! Your petitioner is the employee and these are contractual jobs. You can only work for your O1 petitioner. You are the Phd guy you need to check your facts
Stop obsessing over one company and move on. With your education and visa background, I am sure there are many better jobs available.
What’s better than being an “important researcher” at Google?
You'll figure it out. "Extremely Important Researcher" at Albertsons could be one.
