In my old company I got a MBP from 2013. I always hated it. The company has a policy to buy hardware only when there is nothing sitting on internal shelves. But since the churn is high in company they always have old notebooks for new joiners. I fucking hate every moment of working on an old MBP. My happiness is determined by TC + latest Apple hardware. What about in FAANG companies? Do new joiners get new hardware or just old notebooks sitting on shelves? Did anyone get the new Mac Pro desktop? Specially if working on ML type stuff?
New hire engineers always get new hardware
What kind of hardware they get to choose?
New hardware on join, hw refresh every three years or even earlier with manager approval.
Amazon is whatever’s on the shelf. The computer can be 4 years old before it’s cycled out but that’s 4 years from purchase date. So they’ve pulled some shady shit like purchasing 2013 MBP and saying it’s only 2 years old because they bought it “new” in 2016. That said if you’re an SDE your manager will buy you basically whatever you want and circumvent the policy. The rest of us product plebes are stuck with whatever shit is left over.
Frugality. Amazon don't care bout us.
I think I got a used laptop when I joined but new hires are getting new MBPs or Windows laptops (employee's choice). Refresh after 3 years.
I just hired 3 people. 1 got a “new” HP which is the same one they’ve been issuing for 2 years, but it was NIB. The other two got used ones with stickers from past employees.
What roles? Mostly SDE/AS around me.
At G, the only thing I use my MBP for is listening to Spotify or YouTube. For rest it's pretty much useless.
Get whatever you want that makes you productive. Never understood why a company would pay someone so much but try to nickle and dime them on a tax deductable efficiency tool.
Productivity is one thing happiness is another .... I am productive on many machines but happy only on a new shinny precious MBP or Mac Pro
FB was new for new full time, not sure for contractors.
We don’t use Mac Pro desktop from anywhere I’ve seen. We have HP desktops that have gLinux on it.
Not even MBP? It’s all plastic hardware from HP?
We have the latest MBP when you join. We also have a Mac desktop you can pick for your desktop if you're a SWE.
