Google contracts a ton from Adecco and HCL. Why pay these middlemen so much instead of just hiring these contractors as full-time? Spread the wealth. Adecco is a glorified body shop that had $27 billion in revenues. Where are you Google employees in advocating for these temp workers? It looks like you guys treat them as second-class citizens and instead engage in virtue signaling with issues like diversity. http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-google-contractors-20180727-story.html

How to save India from destruction?
India is Southeast Asia?
After the startup I was at went under a few years back, I was on the job search and Adecco reached out to me for a role at Google Express. I wasn’t technical at the time so it was for a business role. You really do feel like a second class citizen in one of these body shops. The staffing company treats you like a commodity and the company you’re prostituted to wants nothing to do with you beyond the hourly wage. This made me mad and I studied coding on my own time for a year while making $50-$60K as a contractor in MTV. Out of spite, I applied and ended up getting a full time SWE offer at Google but didn’t want to live a life of ignorant bliss like many of the other engineers in the company. I went to Amazon instead and although people complain about working conditions and whatnot they actually do give full benefits to the non-tech employees which is by far more generous than hiring a massive amount of contractors. Been trying to help fellow contractors get out of their situation ever since but it’s still such a struggle.
I was not aware of Amazons policy towards non-full-time workers. I was under the impression that they treated their warehouse workers like crap. Do you have any sort of news article that talks about Amazons policy towards non-full-time workers? It would be great for some positive PR about Amazon in this regard instead of all the negative news that we see.
https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-employee-benefits-2017-8 A key difference is that Amazon hires more full time people who otherwise could have been filled with a contractor position instead. That’s partly why we’re 5x bigger than Google in terms of employees (putting business model differences aside).
Everyone here gets treated with respect, regardless of their status (eg intern, free, contractor, cafeteria lady). Others would know better than me, but most contractors are in areas that are not Google's strength. Operations, customer support, food services, etc. That frees up the cost of HR from having to do recruiting and paperwork for them. Also allows the company to be more nimble when needed. The fact that they get paid, have a job, get most of the free perks, and are happy working there is strictly better than not having the opportunity to be at Google at all.
Spoken like a true privileged googler. Did you read the article? Some of the contractors are an actual coding positions. This sounds like the white slave masters of the old south saying that as long as the blacks get two square meals a day and a roof over their head, they should be happy. Y’all ought to be ashamed of the way you treat these contractors.
Didn't I say "most contractors" in my post? If the contracting engineer is good enough, he/she will be converted. Given a contract position vs fte, I'm assuming most people will choose fte. Why didn't the contractor want the full time position? Perhaps they didn't pass the full time interview... To use the slave example is stupid. They weren't legally able to leave the farm. These contractors are skilled and could leave if they wanted. The free market allows for that. Not everything needs to have an equal outcome. What people need is the power of freedom. Btw, this is not unique to Google. I've worked at most of the FANG companies and this is true for all of them.
When we can prove we'll have long term work for the person to do and that work is core to what Google does we get full time HC. Otherwise, we get TVCs.
How many ft engineers does Google have? How many contractors?
Approximately NDA engineers and NDA contractors.
Google has this problem for a very long time. This is not the first news article about poor treatments of contractors.
so you are employed by one of the body shop?
Nope, I would never do that. I am my own independent consultant these days.
