Two possible offers. Currently in Intel on 3DXP. Offer 1: Micron, in South Bay Pros: Bump in pay (160k/30k/10%) They are doing well and know the memory industry Being in the bay Cons: Role may not be all that different, and a change would be good Also being in the bay Possible offer 2: Intel NSG, Folsom Pros: Much more different role, wider breath of experience and chance to learn new things Cons: Lateral move in terms of pay Still in Folsom, and prefer a bigger city Any thoughts? Edits: Currently already work in Intel Folsom (for about 1.5 yr) 4 YOE Thanks!
I've worked for both companies. I'd say if you move to Intel Folsom, there aren't any other companies around the area, and Intel won't want to promote you based on your performance. Intel will mostly want to promote you if best worker in your current group + budget looks good for that yearly focal review or they are worried about losing you. You could transfer internally in a year to a better job, but without promotion or pay increase. Folsom is literally in the middle of no where, even Arizona is a better place to live. For micron, you will have opportunity to change company later, but the rent will be 2.5-3k/month if you want to live alone. House impossible for you to buy unless you want to drive 1-2 hours to work (1 way, not round trip) every day. But it may be easier to get promoted or change company. My advice is, the memory business is career suicide. Either move to the Folsom burbs and wait to die, or move to the bay, work hard and get into firmware or software or something else. Both companies will not have a large amount of success or growth anytime soon, and you will be a sitting duck. It's probable both companies may enter recession in the near future (as they already have).
Hey thanks for the post. I currently live in Folsom so I know the area. Yeah, I understand the whole cost of living argument but in terms of environment, growth etc, which sounds better? I realize my current role is quite niche which has turned off recruiters. Hence, given location and scope of each role, wondering which one makes sense to land somewhere else sooner. Thanks.
Sure. Well let me ask you this, are you sure you won't learn new things moving to micron? I would choose micron in the bay or at least a non memory related group at Intel. There's no reason to have to internally transfer to memory related things inside Intel, that seems like the worst decision. I've seen people internally transfer in Intel to things that have nothing to do with their current experience, and it helps their career. They take a little python class and switch to software, AI, etc. and it greatly benefits them. That's the only benefit to stay in Intel. For micron: Option 1: If you stay in the memory business, it still makes more sense to move to micron and then move back to Intel later for level growth and more money. Option 2: if you want to get out of the memory business, you should also move to micron in the bay and can interview with unlimited companies and switch to whatever job you want, and make more money. This is the best option in my opinion.
What's your pay and grade right now? How much of a bump is micron?
Micron in the bay office is a toxic environment . I know this from experience . They retain and promote mediocrity They are also a good old boy network originating in Boise . Layoffs are a way of life. Not sure the role, but pay sounds low and they have awful benefits . You are not even allowed PTO for 90 days. Also factory schedule . You need to take PTO for the day after thanksgiving . If you are moving to the bay you will not be able to afford a good life.
Whatโs your intel on MU 90 calls
It is a good offer for 4YOE. Someone said 50% bump for bay is still negative is not true. 20-25% bump in salary should cover the extra expenses and cost. You can always go back to Folsom slumber.
160k will not cut it alone in the bay. If you have another partner or spouse with similar income then ok you can get by.
Move to Micron. They have invested quite a lot in the 3D crosspoint front by buying out the fab from Intel. Intel has already done the marketing and hyping up of 3DXP and the market is ripe for Micron to come in as the second source for Intel 3DXP SSDs. Every OEM and hyperscaler is waiting for Micron to release those SSDs. In the next few years, 3DXP as DIMM replacement shall be the big thing and again Micron will be sought after. Micron as a company is bound to do better due to their DRAM market and the emergig SSD business. There is much more potential for the Micron stock to go up than Intel. 200k$ TC in the Bay area is not bad at all. There are several folks here with 60 to 70% of that TC and life still goes on. Moving to the bay opens up opportunities and makes it better for Job security. Once you are here and you donโt like the Micron job, you can apply to WD(HGST/Sandisk)/Toshiba/Samsung/SkHynix or any other SSD player in the ecosystem. If not those, then FB/Apple are hiring several Storage product development engineers associated with SSD/system architecture etc. Also it is always better to experience more companies when you are young to get a diverse perspective on company strategies/culture etc than stayin with the same company for so long that they brand you a dinosaur!
