Intel grade 9 TC compare to Bay area

Nov 27, 2019 25 Comments

I came into Intel as a grade 7 phd RCG 6 years ago. im lucky enough to just get my grade 9 this year
Base: $152K
Bonus $60K
Stock: $30-45K depends on the year
TC: $240-250K

I’m pretty happy with what i do and where I am in Portland, but i know the RSU is like a joke compare to bay area companies.
im curious whats my experience to Apple or Google’s TC, and is it worth a transition to the bay area?

I think given lifestyle difference and cost of living, even a extra 50-100k TC should not be a big deal (which you will as an upside at G and Apple). However, the question is being part of a growing and exciting company makes it so worthwhile for your experience and future... which you can't get being stuck at Intel.

I 100% agree with you. I like the life in Portland, but every once in a while I wish I’m in a more aggressive growing company, rather than maintaining status quo. I can’t seem to make a decision between life style and career ambition...

Same TC and grade as you in PDX. There are some things that are way too expensive in the bay. I’ve got a 5 bedroom house in a good school area, 15 min to work. What TC do you need to get that at the bay?

Right, also it feels nice to established yourself in a company, and go to work feels like home. There is never a guarantee how the future work growth or work environment would be down there...

  • Lotta people like to hate on Intel, but on certain teams you really are working on ground breaking stuff that's really pushing the boundaries of what nature allows us to do. Very few companies can offer you that, and Intel is one of them. Again, this depends on what part of Intel you work in.

Stay in Intel. If your bored try out research or something.
I love the work being done at Intel labs.

  • Yes, Bay Area life is not at all quality life. Living in apartments at age of 40 is not fun. Specially with kids. I have seen people like that. Even if you buy house there is no happiness as you are always worried about paying large mortgadge payment every month.

According to levels.fyi Intel grade 9 is at senior staff level, but they only pay SDE2 TC. Something doesn't sound right. Does Intel inflate their job titles?

Also because Intel has most of its workforce in Oregon. They don’t need to pay as competitive
Most of the grade 9-10 are mid-end of their career at intel. Monetary value, they only get paid like a first tier manager in the bay

40% bonus looks quite high. What’s the breakdown?

      You get the 2% basex3.5 department x 5 APB target =35%
Then the QPB gets you somewhere 5-8%

    • I didn’t understand your APB math. Where’s the 2x3.5 come from?
