What is the competition?

Microsoft ๐Ÿ™ˆ_๐Ÿ™‰_๐Ÿ™Š Jul 11, 2018

If you were reading the news, youโ€™d know. Even in the last earnings call Intel expressed worries.

AMD is underdog for many years and years to come

Competition is not new between intel and AMD. It just goes on. There are short term and long term winners.

Ok serious answer. AMD is creeping up again. They are going to steal some market share back from Intel (who managed to get to almost 100% lately). The fact that theyโ€™re challenging in the datacenter space is bad especially because thatโ€™s intelโ€™s cash cow. In the last earnings call Intel itself said that itโ€™s an area of concern. However, that might make a dent, but itโ€™s not the biggest threat to Intel IMHO. Two things Intel needs to be scared of: 1. AMD via Nvidia. Theyโ€™re posed to own the market for AI. They also have certain areas of specialty that can give them an edge. 2. ARM. ARM already won on mobile and IoT (which are key for consumers and will be key for businesses soon, respectively). every major company is preparing for the day where ARM will take over the datacenter too. Itโ€™s no secret. When that happens, it will be very bad for Intel.... I donโ€™t see ARM having many chances in the desktop/laptop market because of software issues, but they can become a threat in the datacenter space and they will, soon. This is another area where AMD can become dangerous thanks to Nvidia.

You must be joking about ARM in servers(Just a few years back AMD had a ARM CPU for server market, until realization hit and back to x86)

Microsoft ๐Ÿ™ˆ_๐Ÿ™‰_๐Ÿ™Š Jul 11, 2018

Today definitely not happening. Some are experimenting with ARM in datacenters, including Facebook and Microsoft, but still limited things. However, things could change. Especially as we get more computing moved towards the edge. Itโ€™s definitely a threat Intel canโ€™t ignore.

Intel is going to be ok this year, but in a couple of years their fabs will not keep up with foundries, and they will end up as the old AMD. Apple leaves Intel modem because of this concern, even MediaTek with foundry made chips will be better by then. Scary huh.

Mediatek news is *alse

Sure, but all it take is one change of mind to make Intel another TI or Broadcom.

Intel messed up 10nm process. They will fall behind in manufacturing for the first time and then their share will start to shrink.

AMD is exceptionally well positioned to capitalize on the fact that Intel optimized data paths for wide vector units that most of the industry is too stupid to learn how to exploit.
