You have to be in a role for at least a year before you can transfer internally. (Some exceptions with HR/Manager approval). That being said Program/Operation/Finance/Marketing Managers are all different ‘Job Profiles’ from Product Managers - they’re classified differently. To change to a Product Manager internally would require you (A) Get sponsored by a Product Management Director (or VP, can’t quite remember off the top of my head). (B) Go through the full product management loops internally, as if you were an external candidate. That being said you would have a bit of a leg up on external candidates being that your, assumably, familiar with internal tools and processes. All the better if you have solid Perf Reviews to show skill. Just be aware that there’s a huge influx of people wanting to be product managers both internally and externally, it’s kinda the ‘it’ thing. Because of that, whenever I hear a coworker say ‘I want to be a product manager!” the initial reaction is, “yeah you and everyone else”.
Thanks. Is it mandatory to get sponsor? I have been SDE before but moved to non-tech job after MBA. I hate it now and want to go back to building products. I like Facebook. But, given my experience after MBA, it’s hard to get PM role. Figuring it out, whether it would be wise to take non-tech role and move to PM role later
Your best bet is to apply for PM roles everywhere FB and non FB. I'm in a similar situation, I took a FB role in a hope to move to something better and now I feel like I'm just wasting my time, I wish I'd gone somewhere else in a role I actually wanted. Life is too short to waste time in a role you don't enjoy, even with free food
