Internal switch in Adobe

Does your manager get notified in case you apply to a job through the internal portal. Also what is the right way of applying to a different team. How easy or difficult is it to change team to a different location.

Yes they do unless you talk to other hiring manager and ask him to do it official at the end

Does the recruiter or the hm gets in touch with your manager before discussing with the candidate.

Before offer yes they do ask for feedback on you . Might affect your work relationship. Some Asian managers are not gonna be mature enough

As a manager myself (and coincidentally someone who happened to work at Adobe in the past), I would want someone on my team to let me know if they were applying to a different team. This was also the expectation that HR and the managers were setting with employees. Of course you have to have a level of trust with your manager that they are going to handle the news professionally and want to support your career development (which I sincerely do), so I can see how sometimes people would shy away from disclosure if that trust is not there.

Summed it up perfectly.

This would be an ideal scenario, but unfortunately not all managers inspire similar confidence and trust worthy relation.

When you “apply” for an internal job posting (assuming through Workday) don’t you have a list out there that says something like - please discuss with your manager before applying ?

Adobe QbgB10 OP Aug 28, 2019

Yes it does. I want to understand if there is a system generated notification that goes to one's manager.

Workday tdf Aug 28, 2019

I don’t think it does. But your new hiring manager will definitely reach out for feedback.

Go and talk to hiring manager over coffee see if you are a fit . Tell them let’s move with interviews if there is a fit you can apply at the end to make it official

This sounds like a great suggestion. But this doesn't seem to be that feasible, in case the hiring manager is in a different location.

You can then and ask for a quick chat.

Adobe bwSw06 Aug 28, 2019

I have heard HR ensures that your manager knows this even before you give interview

Adobe apj133 Aug 28, 2019

Is this true? Can someone confirm?

Confirming that this is NOT true.

I’ve never done a blind internal hiring for a job but no there is no auto notification. I’ve also not seen blind applying be very successful. How I’ve usually seen it go down with myself and others. HMs are not allowed to recruit from other teams, so usually it’s someone on your level that feels out if you are interested in making a change. If so, they mention it to their boss, and the boss mentions to their person that you should reach out to them. It’s then on you to set up a call, lunch, meeting etc with the HM. Usually a fairly informal chat. Sometimes some additional, ‘hey you should talk to people on my team to find out more about the team and role’. If its still a good fit, then next step is for you to have a discussion with your a boss about your future. With their blessing it can move forward. Without their blessing it’s sort of on the HM to go to bat for you. HR then gets involved to start a formal process. Most HMs won’t move forward in a formal capacity until you’ve talked to your boss. Alternatively if they aren’t recruiting you, I would reach out to someone on your level (lunch, call, etc) and learn more about the team and role. Let them know you are interested, and hopefully they’ll run that up to their boss and the process continues as above. Naturally your mileage may vary, but in my experience in both internal and external job changes it’s relationships and referrals that make things happen.

Great advice! Is this advice applicable for s/w engineer roles too?

What happens if the ERC blocks your internal mobility? What to do in such case? The new manager wants the candidate, but the current manager is on his ego trip to destroy the career of the candidate. What to do in such case?
