Do companies in the US actually hire interns from outside or do they just junk out the applicants who are overseas? Should I be taking the effort in applying or should I just stick to my own country?
If you want to intern in the US you will need at least to have CPT, green card or US citizenship. CPT is granted to international students.
There also exists J1, for visiting scholars
The company must be willing to sponsor for that right or do other programs open up specifically for J1?
Yeah, the company must be willing to sponsor the J1 (or any other visa that supports bringing you in as an intern)
You need a J1 Visa to intern in the US. Companies dont care about that since by the time you start making some contributions, it will be time to go home. But Universities do hire Interns, try that
If you want to be in the us your best bet is a masters degree or phd

most companies will ask if you are US citizen or a resident. Most will disqualify you base on that. Maybe some specific companies would but not the majority
