For context I interned at F/G last summer and have a return intern offer. Have offers from all above companies except Airbnb (waiting to hear back). I'm personally ruling out Msft, bloomberg, and Uber (didn't seem to vibe with Uber during interviews). My main question is how is Dropbox these days? How's new grad pay and their engineering reputation? They had the hardest interviews out of all companies I got offers from and seem to maintain high hiring bar even though their stock and product seem to be declining. Since they hire around ~60 interns I thought it'd be a nice change from my F/G experience and intern class seems much more selective than F/G. I might take Airbnb if I get an offer but assuming I don't, should I take Dropbox over F/G and Uber? TC: -50k (student)
What’s the role?
All for SWE intern
I think chance to do something interesting in Dropbox if higher.
Dropbox will match your offers for sure.
These are internship offers
For sure? They have their range for each level, no?
Maybe a poll?
Seems like Dropbox has passed its prime day. My ex manager at Google joined Dropbox and went back to Google within a year.
Oh, that's for sure. Still it has higher concentration of interesting teams for interns. As permanent employer it isn't great.
I mean this feels like it would be this persons junior year internship. Why would you suggest he intern here if you don’t think it’s a good permanent employer?
I previously interned at Dropbox and now work here full time. It definitely feels past its prime, but everyone I work with is very smart and the engineering bar is very good. The pay for new grads is better than G, on par with F, and less than Airbnb. I imagine work life balance on average to be better than F and Airbnb and worse than G, but it’s highly dependent on team. My personal advice is to try Dropbox or Airbnb since you’ve already interned at F/G. Airbnb can pay more than us but based on my experience at Dropbox and multiple friends’ experience at Airbnb, there’s a much stronger focus on engineering at Dropbox whereas there’s more of an emphasis on product and design at Airbnb. Feel free to DM me other questions you might have.
Are you sure Dropbox pays on par with FB? Recent senior offers from Dropbox are way less than FB, not even comparable, like <300k vs 400k
“The pay for new grads is [...] on par with F [...]” I only know about new grad offers. I know this because I had new grad Facebook and Dropbox offers. I had other friends who also had new grad Facebook and Dropbox offers. I cannot speak for senior offers at Facebook because I do not work at Facebook. My knowledge within Dropbox is that senior offers are around $350k TC.
I would strongly suggest against joining Dropbox. It’s way past it’s prime and most people are just coasting at this point. If you want to learn from good people who are excited about their jobs basically anywhere else would be better.
Was a Dropbox intern last summer. The internship projects were actually pretty impactful and I was part of every decision process throughout. The intern program is very well thought out and the small size does make a close knit community that won't be possible at F/G. For an internship I would say it's a great place but that being said I am not going back.
why not going back tho?
