I worked at Tesla for 5 years as a Sr. Automation and Controls engineer myself. You definitely grow a lot career wise at Tesla. The things and problems you work on are really interesting and teach you a lot. But Tesla definitely low balls on the compensation. There is no such thing as work life balance (depends on which team you are joining). If you can get them to raise your level to staff or get your basic pay in the range of 135-160k and get good number of stock options, moving across the country might not be a bad options.
I know there will be now work life balance, and i do enjoy the field, hence the challenge i want to take, i am currently in the mid west making 122k, never been on the cost to know cost of living. May i ask why you left? Other than being burnt out if that is applicable. There were opening for staff manger that i match about 80% of the requirement but on the phone and emails they didnt mention to what position they want me yet.
I am on an H1b visa and they had layoffs in Jan 2018 and June 2018 and as a result my green card application got postponed twice. It freaked me out. But other than that I did not have much to complain... I loved the work and had great colleagues. If you do get the staff level manager you may be able to get a higher pay than what I mentioned above. You can also try out some of the online salary calculators based on locations when you get to the negotiations.
