Interviewing for Google staff level, salary expectations?

Jan 9, 2019 9 Comments

They are asking me for salary expectations, which is tricky. Don't want to give up chance for nice bump, but don't want to appear like a clown by asking something out of band.

Advice? What's the band like?

NEVER give them a number. Just bs like "expecting market rate". The recruiter will give you a floor, and you can negotiate after that.

There is a « band » for the level, if you don’t give any number you’ll get the bottom of the band.

Do your homework, look at blind numbers (even if they are often exaggerated), and state your expectations

They also frequently try to gauge if your looking for more base or you’ll look at the total package

Giving them a number is the best thing. Search blind - you will find what the low and high outliers are for your position. When they ask for a number, hit the high end. You’ll be starting negotiations in a range they won’t scoff at, but let them know you expect higher half of the range

Why is Google asking this? I thought their procedure was: give standard offer unless there are competing offers

The drummer is pretty shitty, but I enjoy the singer.
