We are looking to invest about $100-150k in downpayment and are considering Austin for long term investment. we dont need income now but care about capital appreciation. Is Austin the right place to invest? if not, what other areas are good? if yes, what areas to target in and around austin. thanks
If you don’t care about income now that will make your life a lot easier. Real estate has appreciated significantly in Austin, so you won’t be able to get as much with 100k down as you’d have been able to a couple years ago. Try to find a place where you’ll at least be able to gross $2k in rent. You could consider areas near the arboretum and the domain for a steady stream of renters. It’ll be a little cheaper around there too, and close to tech companies.
You won’t find anything in $100K-150K in Austin or near by areas. Consider high property taxes before investing in Texas real estate.

If you're looking for appreciation, Austin is not the right market. It had a few years with 10% increases but its been 2-3% for past couple of years and I doubt it'll change anytime soon. Bay area is probably better for long term 10+ yr appreciation.
There are better ways to invest money that all have fewer headaches.
