Hey everyone! I’ve been debating between two offers for a 2021 full-time position, and I can’t decide which one to accept. I only have a few days left to decide, and I would really love some input. The IB gig is in healthcare at a BB bank (think UBS, Deutsche, Credit Suisse), and the product management gig is in AI Solutions at a payments Fintech company (think MasterCard, Amex, Visa). Which offer should I take? My dream is to go to a FAANG company as a PM, but I worry it may be too competitive and my PM experience won’t be good enough to get me there. Would it be better to just be a career bankers, or is likely that I would be able to move to a FAANG PM role from one of those companies? Thank you!!
FinTech PMs aren't a respected lot. Atleast those from legacy FinTech companies like the ones you mentioned. I'd take the IB gig which pays much more and you can at some point move to PE/VC which most PMs look at as an exit opportunity.
I don't have the undergrad GPA to move to PE/VC, and I probably wouldn't want to be a career banker so I would just be doing banking for a couple of years before I move to corporate development. Is PM at those legacy FinTech companies really looked down upon? Like for example would PM at Mastercard or Visa (which I've heard are considered full-blown tech companies now) not be considered relevant experience in order to get a PM interview at a FAANG company or Microsoft? Thank you so much for your response!
I guess you got your answer on the other thread. But no, Visa and MasterCard aren't considered full blown tech companies even though they claim to be (they do that to attract talent). It'll be hard to get interview invites from FANG companies and worse yet, you'll be severely downleveled.
If you want To be a PM be a PM. Banking will do nothing for that except help your bank account.
Also being a PM at a faang is very limited. You’ll work in an environment where a lot of shit is figured out for you and you work on small features. PM at a growth startup is much more fun and impactful. And startup is just warzone/ground zero where you have next to no resources/infra/user knowledge.
