I make 140k in midwest but have a 220k offer in Seattle. Would that be a downgrade, upgrade, or even? What’s an equivalent salary to a midwest 140k in Seattle? Edit: Location: Columbus OH
Midwest is too general, city or village?
Columbus OH
Housing wont be affordable for you
What would a 3bd 1ba house with a garage cost in an ok location? Here it would be around 300-350k
That size house anywhere in the Seattle metro would cost more than 1 Million, and probably 1.5
Born and raised in the Midwest. You can't pay me enough to move back there lol YMMV
It’s the same for me, I’m from the South/southern Midwest and can’t believe people want to move to these places. Unless you’re white or maybe black I don’t see how it’s desirable at all.
Amen!
Downgrade in pay. I moved from the Midwest to Bay Area. Everything is 2x more expensive, except housing which is 4x. Seattle has 2x cost of living too, not sure about housing there. However, your career opportunities are probably better in Seattle.
220k is a lot even in Seattle. You’ll be fine. Getting out of the Midwest is its own reward
I moved out here from DC are 7 years ago with an offer making around 165k + stock options at a startup. Luckily that startup folded and I ended up at FB. My TC has gone up 4x in that time . I don't think 220k is a great TC for around here, but certainly manageable. Plenty of people earn far less than that here and are happy. You do have a lot more opportunity here than in the Midwest.
So I guess to clarify, is what would lifestyle look like in Seattle at 220k.. Right now I live pretty comfortably at 140k in Columbus OH and don’t stress much about money. I can max out my investments and eat out every week. Would that start to be a challenge now?
Depends entirely on what you're expecting. You can certainly max out your 401k and eat out every week, but you won't be able to pay for a 5 bedroom house with a huge garden.
Speaking from experience, at $220k, as long as you have a modest apartment(~3k a month), you can max out 401k and eat out every week.
Upgrade. Take it unless it's Amazon 😒
This is pretty useful for these comparisons. https://www.nerdwallet.com/cost-of-living-calculator
You’re out of the Midwest, so that’s a clear upgrade. With the easy quip out of the way, definitely negotiate hard. Too often these companies prey on people coming in from LCoL areas and lowball. You should move to a better area but make sure you’re paid well. You’ll also have access to way more opportunities.
This kind of attitude is what got us Trump.
