Getting an offer around this much. Is this a decent salary to live in Chicago downtown comfortably?

No dependents. No bonus. The role is that of a data Scientist. (Have around 4 years of experience as an analyst) Moving from a small city in the Midwest area where salaries aren't really that much.

    Nope.

Chicago has, IMO, the most architecturally beautiful downtown ever. However, the employers in that area are low balling pricks. If 95k is your TC, it's a VERY bad offer. You should definitely negotiate. Do you have dependents? What's the role? Do you get RSU, bonuses etc?

I mean sure it’s good but is it the best architecture ever? No, not by a long shot. Have you ever been to Prague, Copenhagen, Hong Kong? Let’s be real.

Yes I've been to all those places. Something tells me you don't know What the term "architecturally significant " means. Attractive is subjective. Significance not so much

You’re saying the architecture in those places isn’t significant? Hahahahahaha. That’s rich dude.

Anyway, OP threw in an “IMO” ninja edit so this whole discussion is meaningless when the original claim is no longer being presented as fact.

Leave it up to Blind to try and convince you that fucking CHICAGO has more significant architecture than Prague. What a joke you are.

      Toodles.

@forlorn: Nope, didn't edit. The "IMO" has been there since the beginning.

PS: Anyway, the point I was trying to make with my post was that the Chicago employers don't pay well. This whole discussion went a bit sideways lol

Yeah, nobody is saying the architecture in those places isn't significant. Keep trolling.

95k is doable. I have a family member who pulls it off at 75k.

You will have to budget though, cut back on resturants (very costly there) and wont save much.

Lol@tech workers who think you need 150k+ to be 'comfortable'. Most of america makes 60k work. Not every city is sf/seattle housing prices. Chi is huge and has affordable living options in the city.

@obamacare: Either you have solid facts to back your claim or you're just plain trolling. 24k? You've got to be shitting me.

Something seems deeply flawed with tracking income by household because well I'm a household but I'm one person. On the flip side my aunt and uncle and their 7 kids are also one household. They bring in about 75k per year which is basically just shit. When you have 7 kids. I bring home 100k. On paper by household we are similar in reality I feel pretty rich and they live pretty close to impoverished.

It's cold but not really any more windy than other cities. The name isn't because of actual wind.

A lot of garbage in this thread. That is plenty to get a nice 1BR wherever you want and have plenty left over for social life. You can have an expensive social life, or a cheap social life and save as well, up to you

No. Downtown Chicago is expensive. You need to have at least 110K to be comfortable

It's comfortable, Chicago is really affordable. My 1bedroom monthly rent is 1400/month, I live in one of those neighborhoods north of the loop and just take the L train to work every day. 30min door to door commute.

1 bed apartment in a luxury building downtown will cost $2500/month. That’s about 1/3 of your take home pay. I’d call that affordable

That's roughly a paycheck so it's 1/2 your take home pay. You can see this with a paycheck calculator.

You could get a studio downtown. 1 bedroom in the city but not downtown. Seems low pay for a data scientist.
