Is Amazon Design any different? Or is it PIP culture?

Hey All 👋

I have a recruiter leveling me up to IC6 with two possible roles and atm I have a FB IC5 offer.

Though close in range the work that’s lined up for Amazon is pretty fun and interesting work (retail environment).

Now I know what you’re thinking, Amazon = pips and bananas. Amongst other things (keep it civil).

But I’m a designer and our environment is sometimes a much more relaxed environment and drastically different from SWE culture.

If you’re a designer at Amazon can you speak to the culture in design teams? Is it still highly political and PIP city culture? Is it toxic like all of the stories we hear?

If you can lend a few words to the reality in design at Amazon please help me out!

Like most big tech companies Amazon is an engineering first culture. However the maturity and value of design input varies greatly depending on the team you're on. Having a good manager will have a huge impact on you as well as the size of the design team. There are a lot of lone wolf designers who are the only designer in their organization and they have to work much harder to educate and advocate for design. You can be a lone designer and be happy but you need to like advocating for design and not be afraid of disagreements.

As for being a PIP culture, the only people I've seen put on PIP or let go (design and other job families) were bad at their job and the PIP was warranted.

What type of designer are you? And how many years experience? That TC looks low for an L6 UX designer.

Well I agree with the engineer first culture at Amazon, but it’s also manager first culture, meaning pips mostly are due to politics - I have seen many good engineers and sde 3 who have six years exp at Amazon being piped due to their skirmishes with manager... so totally disagree that pips are truly to do with performance issues at Amazon
