Is Amazon WLB the same for SWE and PMs?

According to Blind community, generally speaking, Amazon has very bad WLB. That’s the main reason I’m doubting whether to apply or not for a PM role.

What would you do if you’re a hard working, competent PM and are not afraid of too much work but have a partner that cares about WLB because you have just got a baby a few months ago?

I will not speak for SWEs, but PM at amazon is pretty stressful.

It’s Amazon…… SWE or PM doesn’t matter when the manager has mandatory URA exit quotas to meet - which they always do. WLB is a concept Amazon has openly stated in the media it does not accept….

👆🏻This. If you are lucky, one of your teammates is leaving because of URA quota every year. Just one manager change/re-org/misunderstanding/miscommunication can push you into the URA quota.

      Thank you!

Crazy to have quotas to get rid of people (if I understand correctly)… Sounds so stupid to me. Good to have standards but quotas? Wtf!

As an swe, I think wlb is worse for PMs. Lots of meetings, customer escalations, deep dive requests from leadership, prep for weekly business reviews, and then on top of that you also have your actual job to do.

If you just had a baby, and your wife thinks you need to work less and support more at home, don’t join amazon at this time. You may even struggle to find time to take your baby for doctor visits during the first year when you are learning the doc centric culture and too many stakeholder reviews.

I’ll starting caring about WLB. That’s where I’d start.

That’s fair. I’m trying to change and that’s why I posted this question. My main objective this year is to listen to my partner and stop working like crazy. I need to spend more time with my family, especially now with our baby.

I’ll definitely look at other companies to make that happen. I’ll still work very well but will now put my family first while being awesome at work (without crazy hours).

Okay. I should’ve said, while meeting or hopefully exceeding expectations. I have a tendency to set the bar very high, and that may be why I struggle with WLB and that’s also why I don’t need more pressure from any company. I already give enough to myself! 😅
