In search of more complex challenges, I'm considering a move. I'd like to move back to a FAANG company, but I'm unsure if I'm qualified. Background: - Non-tech, but used to code websites in high school. - 2-years as a sales-orientated founder, non-tech product. - 4 years at FB (IC5) in business development and a (non-tech) programme management function. - 1.5 years as the sole product manager at a 70-person, 10m ARR start-up, supporting two engineering teams (15-people). Work with Fortune-100 enterprise clients. - MBA Overall - I'm unsure if I'm technical enough for the a FAANG company and whether I would be qualified for anything other than RPM. I distinctly remember interviewing at FB and it often seemed that start-up experience did not remotely translate to the megacorp. Questions: - Do I need to wait another 1.5-years before qualifying for anything at a FAANG? Does my 7-years of pre-PM experience matter? - I've coded/done coding & architecture courses, but never worked as a developer. How big of a challenge will this be? - At my start-up, we have no levels. Does anyone have career expectations docs that I could use calibrate myself?
I think you could probably get an L4/L5 PM interview at Google. A good referral from a PM would probably help make sure you get the initial phone interview. You might be well suited for cloud based on b2b experience and the hiring needs there. I see some candidates that are interviewing for L4 but they ask to assess at L5 as well - so if you crush it you could get that.
Any advice on the technical requirements for a B2B PM role at Google?
Most Google PMs have CS or engineering degrees. If you don't, then you'll want to play up any and all coding and technical experience on your resume. The actual eng interview tends to be about system design ("How would you design ______" and CS 101 questions)
Yes. It’s possible. You have 1.5 years of experience which is > 0 Though I would apply for positions that are in same field as your previous experiences. For example, if you worked in B2B settings, apply for B2B PM roles.
(I'm OP) considering I worked in Partnerships before, I would be especially interested in working in a platform ecosystem PM role. I have decent architectural knowledge of REST APIs, but haven't actually built one. What would the technical requirements for such a role be?
If you understand how APIs work (which isn’t a difficult concept) and can talk about them, then you will be good
