Is FC worth the increased TC?

Aug 7, 2019 21 Comments

Let's say the avg MSFT L64 senior earns $250-300k. I used higher than average numbers because only above average MSFT can survive in Facebook. Works 35hr/wk.

Now assume the avg Facebook E5 earns $350-450k. Works 50hrs/wk.

Adjusting for workload the MSFT guy earns $350k-420k.

So FB hourly rate may be slightly more. Plus have free food.

Is it worth it?

The Facebook engineer is working amongst the smartest people.

The Microsoft engineer is working amongst Microsoft engineers.

Engineer quality wise, there’s really not much of a difference between Microsoft and Amazon. Microsoft does suffer from some title inflation - people who should really be Senior end up being Principal engineers.

But as far as the company and how they treat you goes, Microsoft wins hands down. Microsoft folks might be earning lower TC but a large majority of them are content because you have a perfect balance between work and life in most teams (as all things should be 😉)

Like honestly, how many salty Microsoft guys do you really find on Blind compared to Amazon? That should give some perspective

You make a big assumption that MS will value the same engineers that FB does.

I struggled to get better than average reviews at MS (L64). Never had $250 TC. I left before the SSA wave but I doubt I would have gotten significant amount.

No problem getting EE as E5 here and TC 410k

This. So many people don’t realise that your perceived performance has factors like manager perception, manager competence, right visibility and opportunity

Yes, the FB engineer can always quit and go back to MS if the hours are too much
    The inverse isn't necessarily true

Yes, it's worth it. It's not all about TC and WLB. You will grow much more at Facebook than you would at Microsoft and on a faster timeline.

  • Now apply how much more taxes you need to pay! You will quickly realize that the more you work, the less (per hour) you will receive at the end of the day!

But like people said before, it all depends on what you value!
