Facebook seems like it would be the place where the "cool nerds" go to work. Still brilliant and hard-working I'm sure, but maybe not the traditional socially awkward hardcore nerd pride culture. Would a total nerd-geek that doesn't wear expensive clothes or necessarily know how to do their hair or whatever fit in there...? #askingforafriend
True nerds are at Microsoft. Half of us look like mom should have never let us out of the basement
Yes and I am both proud and scared when I look around me. But clearly you haven’t visited Google offices much... theirs goes to 11.
A FB software engineer needs to have more social skills than an MS one as you are your own PM. Besides that, you can come in dressed in a tablecloth and no one cares. There is a guy in FB-SEA who actually does that.
What do you mean you are your own PM?
Strictly in the context of comparing to Microsoft. As a SWE at FB you need to decide on your own priorities, provide visibility for your own work, negotiate with other teams. You need to set up and evaluate your own experiments. At senior and higher level you also need to come up with a good portion of the work you will be doing yourself.
Not really. Goog might be more suited for nerds. For fb it requires more project management skills and personal. Execution.
It’s important to differentiate “nerds” I think. You have the people that are nerds because it’s a trendy thing to be right now and allow you to get compensated well, and you have the dudes that play DnD and stream themselves speed running games that are 10 years old.
Let’s be precise. http://www.greatwhitesnark.com/2010/03/25/difference-between-nerd-dork-and-geek-explained-in-a-venn-diagram/
FB is Brotastic.
FB does seem to dress more stylishly/gayer than Google. I thought it was a positive though, overall.
I’m awkward, but it’s all good. There are definitely cool kids, but I wouldn’t worry, if you aren’t an asshole and are smart, you’re gonna be fine.
