Evaluating an offer from Amazon. Increase in money is not too much (from 500k to 600k), and commute to Seattle is going to be a pain. As per levels.fyi, I am borderline L8 Director, but they are pushing for Senior Manager. Work wise I am sure I will learn few things (like any other new place), but have seen enough engineers & problems in my career/life to know that nothing is ever outstandingly different and I am kind of happy with my current charter. Should i bother with the offer? i am almost 90% sure about rejecting. Need ur expert opinion! YoE : 15
Personally, it doesn't seem worth it. Is 500k to 600k really going to change much? You'll have to deal with worse commute, risk of changing companies / teams, possibly downlevel...
100k would certainly not change my lifestyle in anyway (i live quite simply in any case)...hence in two minds. Dreading the commute already. Part of the reason for confusion is the doubt that I might be missing out on some important learning opportunities, but one thing i have repeatedly learnt in my entire life/career is that things are pretty much the same everywhere..
Don’t do it. Avoid commute whenever you can.
Don't go
It looks like you are already comfortable and happy. I would say that if you won the game then stop playing. Upside is almost nothing, there are lots of possibilities for the downsides.
Definite step down
If tou accepted the position, what are the chances you would regret it in 6 months? Since you don't have a strong reason why you want to do it, then you likely will be asking yourself why you did later.
I'm currently interviewing at MS, and almost everyone I've talked to or am scheduled to talk to, except the recruiter, is a boomerang or has been there 20+ years. It definitely seems like a place where one can be happy long term. The high number of boomerangs does seem to indicate that checking if the grass really is greener and returning if it isn't may be a viable option.
Negotiate higher pay 700K or stay
Just reject the offer asking for more compensation. If they like you, they will come back ready to pay more.
30% minimum hike to make it considerable. Sr Mgr maps to 66/67, but if you are close to getting into partner at Microsoft in next 2 years then stay. Few things to know about Amazon: 1. WLB will be crazy. 2. You will be asked to write crazy number of documents. 3. No raise for atleast 2-3 years. 4. Sr Mgr to Director promotion is a big step
How about team sizes? Why do you want to step down?
Around 40 at msft. Don’t really have any good reason to leave...just change I guess..Team size at Amazon is not known yet, but likely around the same
