TC: 210, YOE: 4 I keep hearing about MBA to boost your career (and TC) to next level. But given the money in tech career, is it worth pursuing MBA? What kind of TC jump one can expect? Do people get closer to C-suite roles in tech or elsewhere by doing MBA? How is life there if you have done it successfully and how is it different from climbing typical managerial ladder in your company without doing MBA
I have the same question. Been reading few blogs too. My yoe:8
Life lessons > MBA
MBA from an ivy league or stanford/MIT will help. Its about the network they provide. You arent going to learn anything new.
If the plan is to go to C level suite, you need to go for Executive MBA from top 5 or 10 schools. Regular MBA will not set you apart nowadays.
"Regular" aka full time MBA is far more prestigious than executive MBA
Executive MBAs are a fucking joke. Regular MBAs give a far better network.
MBA is not worth the money and time if you are already in a tech job and doing good. Its all about people management and i have seen pure tech managers managing a team better than an MBA grad. MBA does not teach you to be better in managing, it’s 100% BS
That's what my impression is too but again I don't want to bias my decision without getting actual insight and data. That's why I'm asking if anybody here has transitioned from successful tech career to the other side through MBA route or if you're at a position where you make decision about hiring MBAs, what kind of roles are those and TC for them.
Good that you are taking an opinion. You should turn it into a poll though.
MBAs are losing value fast (per dean of my university) b/c as has been mentioned, anyone can go get one. Unless you can get top 10, do a specialized masters
Anyone can get [insert degree here], just a matter of how far down the school rankings you want to go.
Yes but at least a specialized degree shows deeper topical knowledge, an MBA tends to be more broad
Hey, I actually did an MBA unlike most here that have no idea what they're talking about. My answer: no, don't you an MBA in your situation. Few reasons: 1) MBA is most valuable if you want to change function/industry/country, which doesnt seem to be your case. 2) you already earn a bit more than what MBA earn after they graduate (for example they come as L61 at Microsoft) 3) even though you learn some interesting things and network/brand has value (if top10) its not worth taking 2 years off work and spending 150k.
I am SWE, I would like to stick to tech. From SWE, can I aim for CxO (CTO, CEO) without MBA? Does MBA help if I want to grow in SDM ladder? Or startup founding? Does MBA help if I want to grow in tech ladder like Principal Engineer/Fellow etc?
Any clown can get MBA nowadays
But not everyone can get a clown mba 🤡
Honestly I think everyone could
