Major movie production companies are removing their contents from Netflix and starting their own streaming companies. Even Friends will be removed next month. Netflix saw this early and started creating their own contents and adding international contents but is that enough? Can Netflix survive mostly based on its own contents?
Maybe but it's going to hurt. My money is on Disney/ABC/Marvel/ESPN being the most serious and threatening contender so far.
There will be competition... Eventually. If a business cannot survive competition, it sucks. It sucks more if the founder of that business model couldn't face competition
Not impressed with Netflix content. They are churning out content but the quality is questionable. I don't think they can replicate the body of work of the studios in just a few years. In fact, I cancelled Netflix a few months ago because I found myself watching not-so-good shows just like I did on cable more than a decade ago. That time is better spent with family.
Yeah Netflix content is very hit and miss. I think once the other big houses start to move their content to in-house services, we will see Netflix decline.
This is like saying Comcast will die because no one will put their content on it. My bet is Netflix will eventually merge with a studio or media company, then everyone will be fine.
Comcast will die if no one put their content on it. But the content producers don't have a choice: comcast OWNS the infrastructure to deliver that content to home. No one else can build that. Netflix has a much smaller moat, you can stream from anyone. So it's not hard for a producer to pull their content from Netflix.
Comcast owns universal (or vice versa) so they also have a content stream they control.
I think Netflix is harshly judged. Netflix has had multiple bonafide hits: Narcos, Crown, Roma is going to be fantastic. They've also had some series with great runs/influence: House of Cards (later seasons are trash though), Orange is the New Black, Daredevil (idk why it was cancelled). Between Hulu and Amazon combined Netflix's original content is better. Disney is going to have a lot to say about it and sports is the ultimate trump card but Netflix is the only company to show the ability to churn out multiple hits per year with this model.
You’re forgetting Stranger Things. Plus they also have Black Mirror now too.
If the media market was just movies and shows then maybe. But the media market is bigger than that. It includes the social networks (including blind and Reddit), games and newer media types like TikTok. Netflix ain't got the same game as the hot chicks on TikTok or Instagram. The content is too slow and the excitement/second value is quite low compared to other forms of media. I don't think we need more than 20 good movies in a year. Netflix is trying to emulate the all-you-can-eat model of the cable TV -- doesn't work when there are so many alternatives and a fixed number of hours per week. They need to be cheap and diversify into different kinds of content.
I think things will get worse for Netflix before they get better: Content producers will start pulling stuff of Netflix in favor of their own streaming services, consumers won’t want so many subscriptions and so most of these services won’t get as many subscribers and won’t reach as broad an audience and then will go back to Netflix. OR, they will be like Prime Video where they offer everyones subscriptions in one app and get a slice of the subscription fee for themselves.
Who wants to manage multiple subscriptions to multiple streaming services?
I do.I'll charge $2 per month per account.
All that’s going to do is push people to pirate again. No one wants to have 32 accounts with various services and have total monthly fees that add up to $$$. A few of those giants like Disney may be able to survive on their own but majority are idiots for leaving Netflix
Netflix knows precisely what they're doing.
Sometime, but not all the time. That's why Iron Fist sucks.
Ah excuse my lack of meticulousness lol. *at least 2 standard deviations ahead of the average organization but technically still sometimes.
