Hello!! Need suggestions. My husband is a physician and i am a software engineer and we have 2 kids in middle school and elementary. My husband has a job offer in Seattle and my company has an office there so i can move too. But we are little worried about the expenses this move might bring in. How is the housing cost, commute and schools out there? Is Seattle a good city to raise kids? If it matters, we are Asian Indians and currently stay in a relatively small city
What is your current location?
If you are fine with rainy days and not seeing sun for majority of the year, it is a good city. City of Seattle has a few good neighborhoods ( Quinn Anne or Green Lake) for kids with better school districts but you will find better schools over East Side (Bellevue or Mercer Island in the middle). I think Mercer Island is a good place commute wise and also has great schools. The only downside, it is expensive!
When did physicians started worrying about the expenses 🤔?
I really like Seattle. My spouse grew up here and I’ve live here for ten years. We have two kids - there are lots of young families in Seattle and there is a good community of parents to connect into. Housing is a bit expense, probably really expensive compared to Tennessee. Cost of living isn’t too bad. The city is nice and the surroundings are amazing, mountains on all sides and right by the ocean. The schools in Seattle are quite good (both private and public). PM me if you want more details.
Just curious what kind of Physician he is, speciality? Also, from what I know usually pay is more for Doctors in smaller cities compared to big cities. Basically Doctors do not get paid good in cities (tech hubs), where Software Engineer gets paid good.
Yes that’s true. His pay scale might downgrade a bit but we do not expect significant downgrade. I can PM you with details on specialty. Do you know any physician around with whom we can connect?
Bellevue and Mercer Island has great schools and reasonable commute to Seattle.
Depends on how deep pockets are. I would think with two of you earning you will do just fine. Bellevue redmond Mercer island Sammamish are good suburbs in the area
Combined TC?
As a software engineer in Seattle you’ll have more opportunities to increase your pay. Possibly enough to pay the house rent entirely by the difference. Secondly, no state tax. Commuting from Bellevue to Seattle is easier than the other way around. And from Bellevue you can also easily go to Kirkland, Redmond
My husband will be working in Seattle city and my office is in Bellevue. Also, please suggest a good location with good school district for families with kids. We are currently in Tennessee and schools here are not that great, sending our kids to private schools
You haven't mentioned your budget. Look at the intersection of Bellevue, Redmond and Kirkland (South Rose Hill,. Grass Lawn). Lake Washington district is pretty good, commute is good too (15-20 minutes to VMware in Bellevue during rush hour, decent commute to Seattle downtown)
We should be able to afford houses in the 700k-900k range
