Is Seattle worth moving with family?

Nov 26, 2019 44 Comments

Hello!! Need suggestions. My husband is a physician and i am a software engineer and we have 2 kids in middle school and elementary. My husband has a job offer in Seattle and my company has an office there so i can move too. But we are little worried about the expenses this move might bring in. How is the housing cost, commute and schools out there? Is Seattle a good city to raise kids? If it matters, we are Asian Indians and currently stay in a relatively small city

If you are fine with rainy days and not seeing sun for majority of the year, it is a good city. City of Seattle has a few good neighborhoods ( Quinn Anne or Green Lake) for kids with better school districts but you will find better schools over East Side (Bellevue or Mercer Island in the middle). I think Mercer Island is a good place commute wise and also has great schools. The only downside, it is expensive!

Creme, thats more so for folks like ER docs. Most don't cycle like that. And depends on clinic, surgery, and admin duties.

    • Agreed not all Physicians shift work like that, but ER, Critical Care, other specialized fields. But agree that most in-setting clinic Family Physicians do not have such shift, but like general 8 hour schedule

My husband will be working in Seattle city and my office is in Bellevue. Also, please suggest a good location with good school district for families with kids. We are currently in Tennessee and schools here are not that great, sending our kids to private schools

Well, it ranges from 800-900 for mid-sixties in good condition to 1.5-1.7M for a new house. Look at Redfin and ignore those on 124th Ave, they are under high voltage power line.

Families don’t live in Seattle, they are usually in suburban areas which are MUCH better than Seattle

  • As a software engineer in Seattle you’ll have more opportunities to increase your pay. Possibly enough to pay the house rent entirely by the difference. Secondly, no state tax.
Commuting from Bellevue to Seattle is easier than the other way around. And from Bellevue you can also easily go to Kirkland, Redmond

I really like Seattle. My spouse grew up here and I’ve live here for ten years. We have two kids - there are lots of young families in Seattle and there is a good community of parents to connect into. Housing is a bit expense, probably really expensive compared to Tennessee. Cost of living isn’t too bad. The city is nice and the surroundings are amazing, mountains on all sides and right by the ocean. The schools in Seattle are quite good (both private and public). PM me if you want more details.

Please add current TC and the TC you are expecting after moving to Seattle so people here can give more suggestions based on that.

combined salary of $450k. But also would be useful to mention that significant saving is our mindset. We are currently saving 50% of total income. Especially for kids college and retirement.

If we move there we would come down to 410k with our initial salaries

  • Just curious what kind of Physician he is, speciality?

Also, from what I know usually pay is more for Doctors in smaller cities compared to big cities. Basically Doctors do not get paid good in cities (tech hubs), where Software Engineer gets paid good.

Yes that’s true. His pay scale might downgrade a bit but we do not expect significant downgrade. I can PM you with details on specialty. Do you know any physician around with whom we can connect?

For your budget and savings goal and school criteria I would highly recommend Northshore school district and Bothell area. Lots of Indians and Chinese if that matters. Your commute will be 15-30 mins, 45-60 for your husband.
