I was watching this guy https://youtu.be/Btbvv9kfLqo and after 5:00 he tells that Sr SWE at a top tier company makes 400-450k in the Bay Area. That seems inflated. levels.fyi data don’t support this average. What do you think? Context: I switched from Amazon to Microsoft a year ago as Sr ML Engineer. The offer 325k then, before stock appreciation. My AWS offer was similar for L5 applied scientist but that was the top of the band, so mid L6 probably. I just don’t see 400-450k levels being offered that easily to Sr SWE. Also a friend just got 350k offer from google for Sr SWE. Am I missing something? yoe: phd + 6 yrs
Is it true, yes some companies do offer that. Pinterest, Snapchat etc. But most likely the others in that range 400 to 450k as a senior probably are on the upper band like a senior level 3 or 4 and about to reach staff/principal.
I think the average software engineer salary at Netflix is 450-500k. I make ~600k with 11 yoe. Salary, not because of stock appreciation.

400-450K for senior SWEs (Goog L5 and thereabouts) is entirely doable with a but: it is not the default offer, and it is hard to achieve without competing offers from other FAANG companies. If you come at Goog or FB with multiple competing offers, and are leveled at L5+, 400-450K is well within reach. The difference between coming at a FAANG company with competing offers vs. without is night and day.

Yeah, check levels.fyi. For around 10 YOE you can get 500-600k. This corresponds to Facebook L6, G L6, or Uber L5B. You will have to do well in interviews to level at Staff. Otherwise — yeah Senior is about 400kish.
With 600-800K RSU and 200K refresher and a base up to 200K, it’s pretty doable to make 430-480K (without sign-on) at L5 or equivalent, if you have the skills that at least one company willing to spend that much. If all your offers are around median, one has not much power to leverage. All the above are based on personal / contacts data for offers at G, FB, Apple and Nvidia (Nvidia one was surprising to me for a Sr. RS role). With stock appreciation and top performance many L5’s W2 thus can hit 500-600K+ (one of my contact last year would be ~700k, due to 100k sign-on and huge stock appreciation). For instance, at FB top performers can get 2x-3x bonus and refresher alone.
