Is Uber safe to join in Europe (Amsterdam or Vilnius)? Anybody from EU offices that can share their current experience?! Thank you
Vilnius teams are solid and growing.
Do you work at the Vilnius office?
No, but with them.
It’s fine to make hay while the sun shines but no team in Uber will feel truly safe until the company demonstrates a path to sustainable profitability beyond the challenges posed by autonomous competitors such as Waymo, Lyft, Cruise, Tesla, DoorDash and Postmates. The advent of autonomous vehicles will either grow or destroy Uber.
I have an offer from Uber in EU.... offer is awesome, my only concern is that I will find a very bad mood within the team/office. I don’t understand why they let people go, and now they hire new staff that has to be trained before becoming productive?
I suspect the layoffs were retaliation against CA for AB5 and a show of fiscal responsibility for investors. The layoffs probably aren’t impacting morale as much as everyone’s equity compensation decreasing. Lots of people worked hard, thinking their equity was worth $45/share and are a bit less gung-ho after taking a large perceived pay cut. If the stock hits $10-20/share there will be riots
It's a risky venture. Really depends on what your other options are...
If you don't have a better offer, I guess you can do it.
There is no better offer in Amsterdam...
Offer is awesome.... I don’t know what to do :(
Join Booking.com, sell your soul to Perl as a 3YoE+ backend for 80k base + 15% bonus and lots of stock.
I have read very bad stuff about Booking.com Amsterdam: https://www.volkskrant.nl/cultuur-media/wat-er-aan-de-hand-is-bij-booking-com-je-denkt-bij-een-hip-snel-ict-bedrijf-te-gaan-werken-maar-het-is-een-grote-chaos~b36aa144/
Yeah but you'll find that shit in any company with a tech department in the thousands or higher. I was in Amazon for two years and even though I complain about many things at Booking it is not nearly as hectic and soul sucking as Amazon was.
You might be getting hired just so that your manager can fill headcount so he/she doesn’t have to let go of critical personnel later... so a smart way to play it might be to get into the company and then transfer ASAP to a safer division (like freight)
A lot also depends on what org in Uber.
