It once used to be the only company I worked at, but now that I've moved on, I realize how bad it is.
Performance review at capital one is so much politics rather than contributions. So many great contributors get left behind and rated low. Even if you impressed your manager, unless you network extensively outside of your team, you are lost. Not to mention the forced percentages for ratings, promotions, and pips (though it is easy to make it out of pip).
There are many good things about capital one (WLB), but this isn't one of them.
The only company that may be close seems to be Amazon.

It's hard for me to get comfortable doing this, but always exaggerate your achievements, keep talking about them like you're so full of yourself, be confident, step over teammates to make yourself look better, trying to look like you "lead" them, etc.
The difference is that AWS has an annual high pressure grind to deliver features for reinvent, and your pager can go off 40 times per week.
Surely there are some similarities, depending on the company. But the deep involvement of managers of sister teams in determining your rating and promotion, plus the cut-throat environment of cross-cals is not really found at most of the top tech companies
