Is configuring and maintaining the backend infrastructure a responsibility of backend engineers ?

System design interviews at Big tech revolve around designing the infrastructure(like API gateway, load balancers, message queues, databases, caching, sharding, etc) for a product.

Does a backend engineer at Big tech actually configure and maintain that infrastructure ? or do they just design it and then configuration and maintenance is taken care of by the ops team ?
