Is data analytics a good field to move into leadership?

Sep 6, 2020 4 Comments

I have an opportunity to move from IC in SW (PMTS) to data analytics manager. Is data analytics a good field to get into, both from an interest level and long term good career? Looking to move up into leadership type roles and away from technical.

This first opportunity would be in supply chain, but what other fields could you move around into after a few years experience?

I think strong data interpretation skills will help you get into leadership roles across various functions. Some of your words are used maybe too generally (field, technical, role). You could be a data analytics expert in supply chain or marketing or wherever, correct? Sorry if I didnโ€™t understand your intent.

Also, leaders are rarely experts themselves. They are good at hiring experts but understanding/interpreting what they say and connecting the dots with other functions.

    • Yeah I think Iโ€™m too general in my wording because Iโ€™m not 100% sure which direction I want to go. Would want to use this new position as a testing ground to figure out whatโ€™s next.

Understood about not having to be an expert. Good point.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts.
