Why there is so much fuss about having diversity in team/org/company? What good does diversity brings in? I feel this is unfair to others if someone is not getting job he applied for just because they needed a diversity candidate to fill the position even if that guy is way better for that role.
Diversity is more focused on inclusion. I believe it’s important to insure opportunities for those that are underrepresented. When you have diversity you introduce an open and inclusive culture. Employees do more than what is written in their job description.
What if the Native Americans thought diversity was not so important several hundred years ago? Aren’t we celebrating thanksgiving to celebrate their inclusive mindset?
I can’t tell if you’re sarcastic...
Just making a point that diversity and inclusiveness is what brought us together. Though we all have our differences, working with another race/ ethnicity / gender etc is giving us the opportunity to see, understand and learn many positive things from each other. Let’s not focus on the few negatives here and there.
It depends. The people who manufactured your phone are ~99% Chinese. Bringing diversity in won’t help improve products much. At my last job, I wrote USB drivers. It basically required us to follow a spec. I’m not sure what improvements diversity could bring, because our end product had to conform to a predefined industry spec. Things like UX design and arguably front-end engineering are probably where it matters. I have no experience outside of engineering, but it probably matters in HR, marketing, and growth etc.
Except where it helps the culture as a whole. If a company hires 99% Chinese men opts to to focus on more equitable hiring practices, women and men of other races aren’t kept out of the workforce simply because a hiring manager is more comfortable (consciously or subconsciously) with employees that look like him. This allows those other groups to work, which trickles positive effects like, I dunno... FOOD and resources being offered to those near to and dependent on them. And that diverse team may go on and find it to be easier to hire diverse teams later, which means someday everyone has a fair shot at roles they’re qualified for.
@MEFY70 all I understood from that rant is companies should have the same goal as soup kitchens. Who says managers hire people because look like them? Ever heard of correlation? Getting a job isn’t about fairness it’s about satisfying demand at the right time, place, and cost. Get your head out of the clouds
Is there really such a thing as diversity hires?
Yes! You'll know them because they'll work at a company for years, and then still not know the basics that most people pick up on the first week.
1) My company pays significant extra referral bonuses for URMs. 2) We have diversity targets that are linked to bonuses for the execs. 3) It also has been documented that URMs are generally not allowed to be put on PIPs here. HR has pushed back on managers to remove PIPs for URMs and have fast tracked competent URMs for promos. I have seen URM women jump from Staff Engineer to Director in 4-5 years. Basically, a promo every year. 4) Also, there were certain positions basically ear-marked for URMs - groups were not allowed to interview non-URMs for those positions. 5) If a competent URM wants to leave for a better paying company or feels like they are being blocked from climbing the ladder here, we have a special hotline called "Warmline" that they can call and HR will try all they can to retain that URM. If a non-URM uses Warmline to negotiate a pay adjustment because they have a better offer in hand from elsewhere, HR will basically encourage them to leave. So yes, at my company, diversity hires not only exist, but thrive because of a systematic program put in place to boost diversity numbers. You can thank Danielle Brown, our former Diversity VP, who is trying to work her "magic" at Google now. And shortly after she was hired, that Youtube recruiter sued Gootube for trashing non-URM resumes. And we are getting sued for trashing old white guys / age discrimination.
The privileged ones prefer to hire the same crowd even though that crowd might be worse than the underrepresented crowd. Diversity is to give the underrepresented qualified candidates an opportunity to be included because the privileged ones will hire their own under qualified candidates over the underrepresented qualified candidate
Why does it have to be underrepresented qualified and not any qualified candidate?
If you are white and you Interview both good candidates. One is black. One is white. They did well. You will be more likely to hire the white one If a black candidate did a little bit better than white one, you still want to hire the white one. That’s why Indians prefer to hire their own people instead of hiring better candidates that are not Indian.
It’s very clear that those who think diversity is a joke are the ones who have privileges and don’t really give a shit about others. As ru Paul,I would say “sheeshay away”
I might not give a shit about others, but I don’t give a shit equally regardless of your stupid group identity
Sheeshay away your arrogance. Your attitude doesn’t make the world better and the karma will get back to you. Go away and don’t show your ugly face
The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission expects companies to be racially diverse. They've issues warnings against the high tech sector. This is the driving force. Large. Companies. Don't. Want. To. Be. Sued.
Diversity is required for PR and that’s it. The experiment that show diversity helps companies doesn’t replicate. Anyway I support Google appeasing the idiots.
Which experiment are you referring to? I wouldn't call the statistical evidence usually used to justify a diverse workforce an "experiment," per se.
And that evidence would be...?
What do you mean by required? You can build and ship a product without diversity, but the data shows returns tend to be maximized by a diverse workforce. That's not to say a non-diverse workforce can't produce good results.

People around the world think differently and have different approaches to solving problems. When you bring them together you solve some of the biggest challenges. Or you can resort to picking the best only in which case the work place will be filled with Indians
Indians- the best. Very funny 😁
Not all indians are best... They have grown in a culture of rat race...so they take everything as competition and don't hesitate to burn themselves up in job to get the good ratings. Same is the case with chinese people
