I was a top performer...I did infra work that impacted the org in a very positive/game changing way. Because of my work, an entire new team was hired to oversee the infrastructure. A big motivator for me was money. I didn't mind ownership or learning new tech along the way. After my promo, things changed...I didn't get as much money as I thought. Pretty soon everyone around me was also getting promoted even though they did waaay less work than I did. I learned about the Amazon TCT model and found out I'm in bottom of band after promo. Any project I had ownership of was transferred to new hires and I was put into a high profile/big stress project that is poorly executed. 1 new hire reminds me of myself before promo. He's very hungry and is working late hours trying to do more game changing infra work. But I'm over it. I am supposed to work with him, but I lack the motivation to learn new tech and continue forth. Am I wrong with the way I feel? Should I still be performing at my previous pace? Is lack of money an excuse to cover up the fact that I truly may not like learning new CS tech? Or is this a real, legitimate issue?
I think you just spoke the mind of many if not most tech workers. I think more people than you realize feel this way, but like you, they are reluctant to express/show it to colleagues, thinking they will be the odd one out.
So true
Considering how meaningless these companies are in the grand scheme of things, no it’s not bad to be motivated by money.
Consumerism is meaningless and hollow, and all the businesses amazon is involved with is pure consumerism. Ecommerce, consumer home products and electronics(lab126), and renting out cloud services. You're in a consumerist company. You were always in it for the money. Nothing wrong with that as it contributes to the glitz of modern consumerism/society. You just need to be real
You know it better than me that Amazon also enables all kinds of startups. So it does offer something more than vain consumerism
I think you just need a break. Take a long vacation then see how you feel
This Op sounds burnt out... Just need some vacation time to reset the system and if not - move to another place that excites him
I agree. OP take the vacation even if you don’t think you need it. It’s often hard to tell when we need a vacation
I would shop around for new jobs. For me money is the only motivator and I job hop at least every year both to keep it interesting for myself and to increase my comp. Personally I wouldn't even be working on wall street or as a software engineer. What I would rather do with my time is extremely immoral and borderline illegal and I need $$$ to accomplish that
Dm what you would rather do?
Money is equally important or even more in one's career.
If I read your post correctly, what you are seeking is recognition of your hard work. In a for-profit company especially the large ones, it will be promotion and more money compared to your peers. So I don't think it is bad to be motivated by money, as that is a measure of the recognition bestowed upon you by the company. If the company gives everyone the same promo and money after all then naturally you won't feel motivated. ... which is normal. My old boss once told me that a good job has three legs: fun, impact, and money. If any one leg is missing then you're on a tricky balance ...
The yes it's bad voters are all frugal managers who dont want to pay their employees what they're worth
Been that way since I graduated grad school right before the financial crisis. Zero motivation what so ever. Had to keep a job to survive. Females prefer not to get involved with the homeless and the unemployed. No trust fund baby. Parents are lower middle class Recently Promotion aren’t coming as fast as it should, I negotiated and failed. So I left. I went to a job(!🍎) that pays me 50% more in TC. Gave me the level I want at hire. I am more motivated than before. Roughly 50%. that motivation will depreciate very fast if comp isn’t keeping up

Just go to another company if you’re not happy with your pay, lol. The job market is fantastic right now, and clearly favors employees.
