Recently interviewed with Amazon and was made an offer for a lower level (l5 instead of l6) and different job family (Was offered BA role instead of BIE). Recruiter said that the committee felt I was a better fit as a BA. I checked the job posting that I had applied for and saw that the job title was changed to BA on the day I was made the offer. I asked her why was the title changed and her response was " so that we could make you an offer". Anyone else think this is un ethical? Can HM change job title after the interview is complete?
Before an offer letter is signed, yes
Why unethical? Down-leveling happens all the time. Job family change is a bigger jump, but there may have been business decisions made that meant they didn’t need a BIE role at all.
You’ll probably be doing a similar role anyways. My guess is you have analytical skills but were light on the technical skills (eg sql, python). I wouldn’t sweat it, take the offer and you can always switch roles later.
The only tech round i had was on SQL and the rest were LP rounds. Had they interviewed me on python, Dwh etc and then found me a better fit for a BA then it would have been fine. But here it seems that they had me interview for a BIE role all along and later decided that they want a BA instead on the team and simply changed the job title on the posting to reflect that. They tried to make me believe that the Hiring committee thought I was a better fit as a BA but it appears that all along they just wanted a BA.
Aha, they only interviewed you on SQL, nothing related to python automation or data schema modeling, which I would be surprised to find out if BIE interview loop doesn’t include them. This implies it was all planned, and HC review is bs
Not unethical, happens all the time. Likely we’re not able to justify hiring you at original level based on your interview, hence level down. It’s no fun hiring below level you actually need cause it means more work for everyone, team and HM but they must have thought that they can work with you, more coaching, training, etc.
Totally understand the down level but the bigger issue is the job family change from BIE to BA. It's a huge difference in compensation and career path.
Yeah, the job family thing, I think they should have talked to you about it before the offer. But then again, sometimes you join and then they change focus on you. It happens, but odd that they wouldn’t discuss with you first.
Nope. Sounds like you were not a good fit and/or qualified for the original role but they liked you so much they changed the JD to find a way to hire you anyway.
Interestingly the job description is still the same. They only changed the job title. The description still says BIE.
Did you accept and sign the offer then level and title were changed? That’s not possible at Amazon. Even just for changing the joining date, they need to make a new offer and candidate signs again (if agrees).
Haven't accepted the offer yet.i have asked for a call with the hiring manager to better understand the BA role responsibility in the team and career path. I did ask the recruiter about the job title change on the website and all she could do was stammer and made up some shit about the title being changed to make me an offer.
There’s nothing unethical here then. They offered what seemed a better fit for your skills and experience and expectation based on interview. If you don’t like reject the offer.
Nope. If it had been after you'd accepted the offer yes.
Not unethical but it is if they expect you to do BIE work with BA pay (happens all the fucking time to me and tons of people I know)
If they get you to do any type of coding and automation beyond sql you should be prepared to negotiate later...
mind sharing your background and yoe? L6 BIE is very hard for external hire. but if you don't like this then don't accept the offer, why bother coming in feel downleveled and being cheated, it's going to impact your performance
13+ years of experience in the BI/DWH field with extensive experience in dimensional data modelling, report development in BO and Tableau and use SQL and python every day as part of my job. I am ok with the down level but I am not ok with the job title change. Seems very un ethical to make that change on the day they made me the offer( interviewed Friday and received offer on Tuesday and saw job title was updated on Tuesday)
sounds like you should get L6. ask recruiter to see if she can give you another BIE loop if they didn't ask you python or DWH questions in the first loop. it's not fair to you. now that they already decided to give you an offer, they will try to keep you.

Would you rather have them just tell you no for the original job? It doesn’t sound like they intended to do a bait and switch. That doesn’t mean you need to accept the offer though.
