Is it illegal to rent a cheap property so your kids can go to a better school?

Dec 8, 2019 42 Comments

This is in Seattle.
My local school is not great. I was wondering if I could rent a chewp studio apartment in a better school zone, leave it vacant (ie. continue living in my house) and use the cheap places’s address with the school so my kids can go there.
is that illegal? I’d be paying taxes for that district, so I’d imagine this is OK. But wondering if anyone knows the official word on this.

Kids, especially little ones aren’t good at lying so if they tell someone and the news spreads the school has a reason to suspect and might investigate. Also bad way to raise a kid by encouraging being dishonest.

I think good school districts have local laws that prohibit rental properties to keep their public schools exclusive. Let me know if you can find any place to rent in Medina.

So you’re trying to say renters can’t use schools in their district? Where do you all come up with this stuff. If you have property whether owned or rented you are allowed to use services for that district.

What about private school where you can live wherever you want?

You still have to drive the kid everyday

You certainly can but will obviously be expensive. There are no cheap apartments in places with good schools.

Parents used to do that when I was in high school. Not illegal but if the school or other kids find out it would be problematic

I'm not? The school you attend makes a massive difference in outcome. What's cool is it's not just the education (and within that you can break out stem vs creative) itself but culture, experience, and social circles that heavily shape kids. Do you no think your school had any impact on who you are today?

Have you tried changing schools with the district itself? School choice type programs.
This is immoral & illegal (against the law in most jurisdictions). There are stated fines for it. Some school districts do verify - not sure about yours.
Practically speaking: Do you expect your kids to memorize 2 addresses?

That link talks about a student who has property outside the school district. If you rent a property in the school district then you have a residency there. Stop acting like you know, there is yet to be a single person here who can show any law that says you can’t rent or buy a property and not use the services in that district. You pay taxes in that district on your rental or property, you are allowed to use those services. Anyone telling you otherwise ask for the law or county code, they don’t exist.

You’re lazy & dumb as f***. 2 clicks in and the page takes you to the legislature and laws that dictate these matters:
Chapter 392-137 WAC. See subsections 115, 120 all the way through 245. They even define resident.
RCW 28A.225 starting with 220 - 290 get into penalties & fees etc.

  • The forms to enroll your children include info about where they reside. Lying on a document by saying they live at an address they don't live at is fraud.

    • "Reside" is not the same as owning property

Requirements clearly state reside not own. If owned then renters couldn’t use the schools either. Why do you all make this stuff up? Either your jealous you can’t afford to do this, or you have some other initiative.

  • Don't squatters take over anything left vacant for more than a couple weeks in Seattle? Sounds risky...
