Is it normal to be hired as a front end SWE and have AWS responsibilities?

E.g, from creating docker images, configuring and using monitoring services for your docker container, all the way up to writing front end code.

Yup thats how they can pay you less for more demanding job. It’s like being hired as a janitor at NASA and being given the task to spearhead the next mission to Pluto

Hey man, see it as as a growth opportunity. AWS will take over the world and still a new technology. Your demand will skyrocket and your pay will increase too as more companies move to SaaS and PaaS models

What’s the problem here? 215k isn’t bad TC. You’re learning backend at Intuit’s dime and expense. Spend a year learning everything you can about AWS, docker, microservices etc Then brand yourself full-stack and switch for +30% TC

Unfortunately we have a proprietary wrapper around AWS so I’m not using it directly— which makes my learning less valuable. But, I am learning docker and microservice architecture.

If your team is incredibly incompetent anything can happen

It’s not incompetence. It’s more like, understaffed and people can choose to do what they want, so long as your work is obviously tied to moving the business forward.

Ops is perceived as more "Charlie work" so it may be lumped as frontend

Really depends. I’ve had situations where I’ve only done development work and others where I’ve handled all infrastructure up to the actual API. These days the trend seems to be giving development teams more control over their pipelines so SREs could focus on more important things.
