I want 6 months since initial offer to work on my side project and spend time with family. Will companies be okay with this? I know Google and FB allow a 1 year time. But what about others like Uber, Airbnb, Dropbox, LinkedIn, etc? Should you clarify this after or before receiving an offer with the recruiter? Or w hiring manager? UPDATE: Maybe a better question is how long could I delay reasonably? Personally I've done 1 month at most...
I personally think this depends on the team your joining, not just the company. If you’re joining a large team, where several engineers do similar work and they’re hiring you to scale up, you can probably pull it off. If you’re being hired for a specific skill set and the team is not that large (or redundant), the hiring manager may decide to hire somebody else instead to cover needs. I think that would be perfectly reasonable as well.
Before receiving an offer.
Just tell them you got approval on Blind. Congrats!
The ethical thing is to tell recruiter up front. But I don’t think you have anything to gain from that... just gives them a chance to say no early. “Greedy” thing to do is secure offer first and then ask. Might burn a bridge though
No team will wait 6 months. Your interview results are good for a year. If you aren’t ready to move to team match or give an answer ask your recruiter to put you on hold until a more reasonable timeline. Don’t burn bridges by being dishonest - this will also piss off any engineering manager who gets aligned to you
If you tell recruiter at the beginning they just won’t interview you. I agree with the bridge burning but OP wants to secure an offer. But if you interview at G you don’t interview for a specific team.. pass HC then team match. So no pissed manager. OP wants to pass HC and delay team match
^i need to hire you to be my Blind secretary. Spot on.

Wow does Google/FB really allow such long start delay times? I’d be interested in hearing what other companies allow this.
What he means is that hiring committee decisions are good for a year. This is to allow you to find a team match, I’m not sure they will be cool with you telling them to hold off for 6 months.
