Is it realistic to be CEO of amazon

Say somebody does their job and aggressively applies for high impact jobs in important projects. They try for director then vp then wait for a board slot. How realistic is this and what is the success rate? Not counting people who give up.

You should historical rates and guage the likelihood.

Anyone with age can get a manager role, director and vp is easy to get after that if you don't screw up, and if only 20% of people want to be CEO and 10% are in a p&l department pretty much all those become ceo

There aren't enough VPs with serious interest in advancing to really compete

You’re better off playing the powerball. Looking at it realistically there is little likelihood that Bezos steps down anytime soon and it is even less likely that he would find himself dismissed by the board... so essentially what you need to do is time it perfectly...without knowing anything about timeframe other than ‘not today’...so let’s put the impossibilities on timing to the side for a minute and talk about positioning... When amazon is looking for their next CEO will they hire internally or externally? Stats show that this is pretty much a toss up with a slight favorability towards external, but due to Amazon’s rather cultish environment I’d say it swings back towards internal a fair ways but by no means is it a certainty...so where are you gonna gamble? If you manage to nail both of those unknowns, congratulations, now all you have to do is beat out the competition. If they hire internally you’ll almost guaranteed have to be president/CEO of one of the major business units (AWS, CDO, etc) so fortunately the number of competitors that exist internally is fairly small...but good luck getting into the ring. If they decide on external CEO, they will almost certainly only settle for poaching a CEO from another massive (say fortune 50) company and since amazon literally has its hand in every cookie jar it wouldn’t even be easy to predict what sector they would pull from. Good luck

So what is the internal path? Is going to director or VP exceedingly difficult? There are thousands of VPs, a small fraction if them have ivy league MBA. As a VP in a p&l sector you would only be competing with a small group to be head, and most don't care.

It’s certainly not impossible, but if it were easy everyone would be bringing home 500-1m TC... I doubt amazon places much emphasis on MBAs...having the experience of getting an MBA may help you bridge the gap but I doubt amazon cares about the piece of paper for VP positions

Your odds may go up with another divorce!

You are infinitely more likely to be CEO by founding a company.

Lol. Then I will become a CEO tomorrow (not today).

Keep applying for CEO through SWE roles, just put it in the notes.

Maybe. Should probably do 600 LC hards just to be safe.

I’m sorry, no chance...sorry to be blunt

Andy Jassy is most likely to be the next CEO because of AWS. They will probably find a new CEO for AWS
