Hi all, I am a senior at a state university and have been struggling lately to find a job as I am graduating in May of 2019. The Plan was to go to grad school straight but again, I decided to work for a couple of years. I probably have applied to about 67 companies so far and have mostly received rejections. The fact that I'll require a sponsorship later on might be one of the few major factors behind this. I did receive around 4 interviews(Apple, wayfair, BNY Mellon, Blackrock) but already got rejected from 2 and I've got no hope from remaining two either. I worry everyday as my graduation date is nearing and as it's already December, I don't see a clear bright path ahead. Well, the goal of my post is to hear from you guys. Based on your experience, what makes a successful candidate? Guys, please give me some suggestions, what do you think would be the best thing to do? Yes, I am looking for a job in tech(software engineering).
now it is too difficult to get h1b. many people have worked for years are still using opt.
And that will soon end too, as the admin has signaled it intends to bar ppl who spend more than 1yr on OPT (2 yrs in critical need fields) from applying for h1b at all.
I have no much idea of USA, not following h1 visa news much. But Canada opens arms to qualified ppl if you struggle to get in USA. IMO it could be good experience to go there 2 years
Yeah, but do we need to apply as a grad student or just apply to Canadian companies and go there. I am sorry, I have very little knowledge about this. Their website says express entry and they require you to take the IelTs, not sure if it applies to all.
I guess you can see the details here https://www.canada.ca/en/services/immigration-citizenship.html
What’s your GPA? Lots of students just plain don’t put in the effort and just pass classes without ever developing a passion. Are you passionate about coding?
Gpa is above 3.5 and yes, I love coding.
So it IS about your previous statistics and not ANYTHING to do with your interview performance! Fuck your coding capability, if your GPA is under some arbitrary standard we impose, fuck you and your superior problem solving skills!
OP where are you working currently? Software Engineer?
No, I am still in school. Looking for software engineering jobs.
How are at Blind then?
Market is becoming saturated. Everyone and their mom is trying to be a software engineer now (see other post about a mom trying to crack FANG https://us.teamblind.com/s/KSSJTuNF)
Is there anything I can search to find this?
@saulder This kinda makes sense.
If you have an American significant other you're serious about, just get married and be done with the visas forever. Then you can at least get any job or go back to school. Otherwise, get some career advice from someone you admire, who's had similar circumstances and they're in a place you would rather be. Network, make powerful friends, get so good at what you do that everybody listens.
Marriage? He is probably 20 years old and it is not 1940s.
This is just free advice that worked for me. Happily married for 7 yrs. Together for 4yrs before that. Married aged 24. It could work for OP too. I'm well aware it's 2018 and I'm super thankful to have missed the age of Tinder.
So from interviewing waay to many candidates over the last four years IMHO someone with a BS degree and a passionate enough to work on some open source projects in highschool get an equal chance. They are both going to require training and have holes in their education. It’s going to be who’s the better cultural fit. Now masters student seem to need a lot less training and have a lot less holes but there are reasons even google hires strait out of coding camps these days. If you really want it work on that portfolio or get a masters.
67? Really?
What type of job are you searching? Tech?
Yes, tech job. Just made an edit.
be more specific about what you’re looking for. is it SW or HW? give specifics to get more accurate answers
