Is it risky to ask for a raise?

Current TC 115 K + 32 K (bonus) = 147K Years of Experience : 4.5 (all in the same firm) I work as a software engineer in Boston for a financial firm that is doing pretty well. I have been given an yearly 8 - 10% raises ever since I joined. It is possible I would be given an additional 10% raise taking my pay at the end of the year ~ 160K TC. However when compared to the Boston area tech firms (like Akamai, TripAdvisor, not including FAANG) I believe I am underpaid by around 20K. Does it make sense to ask for the raise? If I ask for a raise and they smell that I am unhappy they might put a hole in my bonus since they know I would leave. I am a very good if not the best performer in my team. Is my TC too less and is there a room for improvement?

Seems like they've been treating you pretty well

Not sure what makes you say that. Will asking for raise be an issue in this case?

8% raises is unheard of

If you are not comfortable asking for a raise and are afraid that they will screw you up after then it is not the company you should work for and plan a long term carrer. Ask and start looking outside.

Depends on how he asks as well.

Ask politely and respectfully in a 1:1 with your manager. Asking early gives them some more time to pull budget strings too. If you're as valuable as you say, $20k is a very cheap cost to keep you there and happy vs hiring someone to replace you.

I would say it’s about 35K if you don’t consider the raise. Basically the request is to increase the pay from 145 to 180. It’s almost close to what Amazon pays for an SDE II in Boston I believe

Depends on your experience and how hard you negotiate. I've heard of offers as high as 210 TC here pre negotiating but they had more experience and the sde ii band is annoyingly wide in terms of leveling. 35k is small enough that imo if you're still learning and growing (especially with leadership opportunities), its probably not worth it but asking cant hurt. I was in a similar boat and jumped mostly cos of industry and a 50% pay bump. Don't forget that your raw salary goes down after Year 1 though!

Whattt Wayfair 200+ for ~5yoe? That's pretty wild. @OP: I just mean that your 2nd year bonus is less than your 1st year because more of your stocks vest. So your TC will be similar but the actual cash you take home will be less since stocks become a bigger part. Though that changes with refreshers I suppose Someone who has been at Amazon longer can chime in if it's a different experience tho
