Is it worth investing $500K for a EB5 Green Card rather than waiting for EB2 for decades?

Getting a EB2 or EB3 green card is going to take decades for Indians. Is it worth to liquidate the savings and take the EB5 route which costs $500K?

I don't think with $500k you could go back to India and live like a king. 500k is about 3 crores ... That will fetch 18-20 lakhs per year interest rate... If you work then you are looking at additional 40 lakhs per annum. Given the inflation in India... It's not good money. Your net income aka take home pay along with monthly interest income should be at least 4-5 lakhs. Otherwise don't go back

Yeah, I was talking about 7-9% bank interest per annum which is a safe bet.

Which banks offer 9%? It’s more like 6% these days

You could always just go back to India with that $500k and live like a king.

Imposter() , let me rephrase myself, it is not up to the US to adjust itself to other countries geopolitical situations. Split India in 30 countries and you will get your faster queue. The us is in not way rewarding the USSR, there is a cap for each country, now it would be unfair if it had given multiple cap to the USSR based on the states that composed it while the later was still alive.

Life is unfair. You can either complain about how things should be, or take your decisions based on how things are.

    • Yeah you are right then they should change the name to " Employment and country of birth based" category to make the discrimination more overt. Only US has country based quotas in developed countries and outdated rules.

There's is diversity lottery already to for charity and quota. Giving residency to H1B is not charity but common sense and a give and take relationship where we are loosing more than gaining. If you believe in quota then it should be based on the amount which country provides the workers. Why should Uruguay get <= 7% when 80% of EB PR applicants are Indian and Chinese.

I don't have any social security if I leave the US after 10 years of living here and paying almost $400k in taxes. That's why limbo is fucked up despite being a productive contributor to the economy here. All of my friends are like that. It's very easy for you to say this stuff cause you're not on the receiving end of this discrimination and probably for your GC easily just because you're born in another country by just a matter of fate. If you're born in India you'll feel the same way....

    • Eg. I have an Indian friend. He had same cultural background as me, we speak the same language, eat same food. The only difference is he was born in Botswana where his dad was a trader and then later moved to India. He got his GC in two years due to his country of birth. His passport is Indian. That's why the US immigration system is outdated. Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepalese Nepalese aren't that different culturally than different types of Indians there are. Discrimination in the name of country of birth in WB category is bullshit and an ineffective joke.

Many of you complaining about living in India. Your view of India highly superficial. India has less resources and many people. That’s why the problems that you have mentioned happens. India is a beautiful country. In India, the law punishes the most powerful politicians and actors if they are found guilty. In many countries, it won’t even come out. How long do you have to wait to get a appointment with a medical specialist in India vs Developed countries? In developed countries, medicine is dictated by insurance companies. I completed my undergrad from a top University paying almost nothing. The system is the best in India. The execution is the problem. The root cause is, India has very limited resources. It is like complaining a poor kid of being ignorant, because he didn’t have money to pay for education. You have taken the resource from the country. The fertile land made you what you are today. The least you can do is, not to spoil the image in front of other country people.

World number 2 economy in terms of size... yes but for an individual india is a living hell. The gdp per capita for india in 2017 was $2000 according to the imf. It really has a very long way to go.... even to escape poverty. It will take at least a decade and a half

There is a reason why Canada has a smaller population than the USA. <- I think you are missing the point. That's actually what we are looking to change. Both literally and also economically.

A friend of mine recently went to India and it is just not about being able to hire maids .. etc but after living here for so long it is just a big culture shock .. safety of kids, un professional standards across the board ,finding proper schools , activities ... essentially he tried to recreate his life style here - there and it costed about the same and he still could not get it right.

Just started this process recently. Got tired of the uncertainty with H1B. However, people should realize that with the number of investors going up, the process end to end takes almost 5-6 years or longer . So be comfortable with the idea of having that money being inaccessible for a while. Also, I agree with lot of the posters that if you are the kind who thinks that 500k in India can give you a good life, then you probably are considering a different level of lifestyle compared to what is here in the US. Maids, cars, housing alone will set you back 1-2crs and then if you want to actually save and take exotic vacations, 500k is gone really fast. Certainly, the city where you move makes a huge difference but metros are certainly at par with Bay Area in terms of cost.
