Is it worth it to go through multiple interview loops every year to keep skills fresh?

Aug 12, 2021 13 Comments

I’ve been at Microsoft for a year (and my old company for a year before that) so I’m not really looking to move, but I had recruiters from Dropbox and Amazon reach out. I thought it might be worth it to go through the interview loops (maybe I’d get a killer offer too), but I’m a little worried about potentially having 3 jobs in 3 years on my resume.

Is it worth it to go through interview loops even if I’m not sure I would switch?

I would love to say you are wasting everyone's valuable time and costing companies money, but really the industry has brought this on themselves. Go for it!

Idk about every year but maybe every 2 years just bc it's still significant amount of work. I'd personally go for interviews (when not actively searching) only if the company is somewhere I genuinely would consider going to.

That said, I would definitely be worried about 3 jobs in 3 years not in resume sense, but in terms of work done, etc. You can't get anything substantial done in 1 year in most cases in my opinion

  • Yes and No. If you fail the interview you not many companies will give you more then 2 chances so just interview with companies you are not planning to join.

If you want to have the same job title/role forever, you’ll get good at interviewing for that kind of role… naturally, your role should grow, thus the questions you answer in interviews should be expected to be more complex the more you move up. If you just want to master things like how you introduce yourself and your background, you can use sites like pramp.com to stay comfortable with some generic interview questions
