Why or why not? Currently living in Indianapolis, TC 125k remote, North Carolina is the goal destination. I'm also married and have a dog, but no kids yet. Turning 26 this year. We have family within an hour and have recently made a lot of friends in the area. I hate winter, exercising outside in the cold, and the dark, dreary 6 month depression that ensues.
Like Chicago midwest or none Chicago midwest?

Are you a data engineer?
Yes, but only if you have a gig lined up that pays the cost of living increase. It also matters what your living situation is. A partner and kids has much different expectations and requirements than a single SWE that is ok living off instant ramen if you had to. What's your situation, current TC, and what area are you looking to jump from/to?

125k in Indy gonna be tough to beat CoL to Salary ratio wise at 26. Edit: Misread your post. NC CoL will be similar. So it'd probably be a good move if you'd prefer to be in NC
I’m moving to the Midwest after getting experience in the Bay Area, Seattle and NYC. Move to the coasts for experience. Move to the Midwest for family.

This is a simple, yes IMO. Better job market and not a significant increase in COL. If it was the other coast I would pause for additional info. Have a job lined up first, naturally.
We do have family within an hour drive though, and have made a lot of friends here recently
I fail to see how either option is better than the other one. Podunk_1 vs. Podunk_2... Toss a coin.
Better weather, outdoor opportunities, better job opportunities
Does NC have better weather?
You hate the cold and are living in Indy by choice
NC has better weather. Depends on what part you move to for everything else, I’d focus on the Raleigh area as there is a lot of culture, academics, foodie scene and lots of smart people. Avoid Durham, working there is fine...living there is not. My spouse and I passed on kids so that didn’t play into our decision. We’ve lived in Indy, the winters are not great. We do miss family, but would never move back there. Raleigh is a great city with tons to offer, Charlotte is nice - but basically just a bigger version of Indy. Asheville is a cute town, beautiful...but a bit slow paced for us. Wilmington is nice too, but it’s like a smaller version of Indy that’s near water. When hurricanes come through you have to deal with those, but it’s manageable. Outer Banks are isolated, great for vacation and bad for anything else.
I see you work for Amazon. Do you currently live in Raleigh or Seattle? We loved Raleigh when we visited.
Seattle, but I’ve lived all over the US. And, we’ll be moving soon to the south/Midwest. Likely Nashville or Raleigh.
Really depends on what you want, that TC does scale up high on the coasts or wherever. 1) Given you are remote, you would lose that flexibility 2) If you are getting a comparable TC then you should consider NC. Do research on this. 3) If you like house ownership and want your house to appreciate in 5 years to 15 years timeframe then don't move 4) If you are chasing passive income and early retirement, buy commercial real estate in exterior downtown or residential property downtown (Fountain Square) with appreciation and rental income you should be set for life. Then you can live anywhere Just remember you can make friends anywhere if you are social, it really depends on what you want in life and how much you hate the winter. People have families in countries where flights take 20 hours to go and they enjoy their family moments as well.
