I am struggling with my current work and consider to move to another company (if moving to another team failed). If you go to Facebook/Linkedin/Airbnb/Uber/Pinterest and get higher pay, obviously it is not a retrograde. But if you go to Microsoft/Amazon you probably will not get a good enough pay and the "level" of company seems to be lower. I was wondering if there are many people who leave Google and go to some company that is not considered as the same level of Google. If they do this, how do they explain to their friends/relatives why they leave Google and join a lower-level company?
Why does it matter to your relatives, where you work? As long as the pay is comparable, I don't think it's anyone's business
Even pay doesn’t need to be comparable, it should make you happy.
Amazon is on the same level with Google, in some departments and some aspects, Amazon is better
Not for comp
Depends on level too.. google L4 —> amazon L6 would result in similar pay and therefore would not be a retrograde move.
You don’t know what you’re talking about. I just got a google offer at L4 when I was downleveled by the HC that is a 15% pay cut from my current comp at amazon at L5
Google lowballs when u don’t have competing offers. But OP would have stacking RSU refreshers from being at google for a while
Just curios why are you leaving google, what do you mean by “struggling with your work” ?
Does the job you’re struggling with at google involve poll design?
If you get more money anywhere else it's an upgrade
I'm leaving Google for a no name company. Why? I don't see my career path at Google, it is hard / taking forever to go to the next level. I can go to a smaller company and get more exposure and other skills. Comp is lower, but if I want to learn things, I am willing to pay this as a tuition. Why didn't I go to comparable name company? Because they are all big, and it is really hard to find something to find the right combination of things. If you go to a smaller company, they will be grateful you are there, and you can stretch to do things outside of your expertise like Sales, Marketing, PM, etc. My relatives/other people aren't as important as what I think is right for me
Considered by who? Nobody actually cares about that stuff.

The only way it would make sense would be if the TC was higher via a higher title at the new company
