Currently ~4 YOE at Amazon. Seattle is fun but want to move to a bigger city like NYC. Is moving to NYC a safe career move for tech? I worry about not getting as abundant tech opportunities like we do in Seattle.
NYC is just a better place to be for most things
Wondering the same thing. Following
For people voting against moving to NYC, what are your experiences or reasons?
Fb and google are in NYC. What more opportunities do u need?
Yeah but both hard to get into though
G has really poor headcount and positions in multiple fields in nyc...
I hope you're prepared for a massive drop in quality of life OP
Phhh ... not really - as city life nyc is better and if you want suburb life - north jersey (Bergen county) is amazing Know both - only thing nicer in Seattle is winters are not as cold and tax
Don't be under any illusions that your dating life will be drastically different in NYC, because it won't. The lifestyle is very different here, and you may like it better depending on your preferences.
Howโs quality of life there? Bloomberg. What do people do on weekends?
Not moving for dating scene, more because there are a lot more things to do in NYC, working with people from diverse backgrounds vs just tech background in Seattle, working with people from different companies vs just Amazon/MS in Seattle. Better seasons, more sunny days, fintech opportunities, better food variety. On the negative side, harsher winters, smaller Amazon presence (for me), ~1500 increase in rent if want to maintain same convenience as in Seattle, higher taxes, possibly longer commute and older apartments if you want to pay Seattle rents. Living in Jersey City or Queens defeats the purpose of moving to NYC then, Seattle is probably better than Jersey City or Queens.
I moved from NYC to Seattle. By moving to NYC your quality of life is really gonna take a hit. If you don t wanna pay 3500 a month for a flat. Your place is going to be very small or very old. A lot of stuff to do after work which is great when you are in your 20s and single but that does not last forever.
There are offices of most of the big ones and those who Donโt have big offices - open soon (example - future Apple 5000 employee office). Plus very interesting startup and fintech scene Many companies I talked with view ny as a place to get more talent than currently available in Seattle.
Plenty of opportunities in NYC, and you get more opportunities in fintech as well.
